Among bioactive phytochemicals, ellagic acid (EA) is one of the most controversial because its high antioxidant and cancer-preventing effects are strongly inhibited by low gastrointestinal absorption and rapid excretion. Strategies toward an increase of solubility in water and bioavailability, while preserving its structural integrity and warranting its controlled release at the physiological targets, are therefore largely pursued. In this work, EA lysine salt at 1:4 molar ratio (EALYS), exhibiting a more than 400 times increase of water solubility with respect to literature reports, was incorporated at 10% in low methoxylated (LM) and high methoxylated (HM) pectin films. The release of EA in PBS at pH 7.4 from both film preparations was comparable and reached 15% of the loaded compound over 2 h. Under simulated gastric conditions, release of EA from HM and LM pectin films was minimal at gastric pH, whereas higher concentrations—up to 300 µM, corresponding to ca. 50% of the overall content—were obtained in the case of the HM pectin film after 2 h incubation at the slightly alkaline pH of small intestine environment, with the enzyme and bile salt components enhancing the release. EALYS pectin films showed a good prebiotic activity as evaluated by determination of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels following microbial fermentation, with a low but significant increase of the effects produced by the pectins themselves. Predicting the metabolic behavior of the human gut microbiota in different contexts is one of the most promising areas of constraint-based modeling. Recently, we presented a supra-organismal approach to build context-specific metabolic networks of bacterial communities using functional and taxonomic assignments of meta-omics data. In this work, this algorithm is applied to elucidate the metabolic changes induced over the first year after birth in the gut microbiota of a cohort of Spanish infants. We used metagenomics data of fecal samples and nutritional data of 13 infants at five time points. The resulting networks for each time point were analyzed, finding significant alterations once solid food is introduced in the diet. Our work shows that solid food leads to a different pattern of output metabolites that can be potentially released from the gut microbiota to the host. Experimental validation is presented for ferulate, a neuroprotective metabolite involved in the gut-brain axis. ; IA was supported by a Basque Government predoctoral grant (PRE_2017_2_0028). In this study we aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and metabolic effect of a dietary supplement based on alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) in order to include this product in a novel PN service. The antioxidant properties of the commercial nutraceutical were investigated at physiological conditions (through in vitro digestion) and at mitochondrial conditions. The metabolic activity was assessed in a human pilot study using a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) methodology in dried urine samples. The nutraceutical exerted an elevated antiradical activity and reducing capacity, especially at mitochondrial conditions, after in vitro digestion. This increase in mitochondrial activity was also evidenced in vivo by a significant increase in the urinary phosphate concentration (p = 0.004). As pro-oxidant effect was reached with the concentration of 4 capsules, 2 capsules at the same time could be a reasonable dose. No adverse effects were recorded in vivo with this dose. The main objective of this work was to evaluate the effect that several plant extracts (currently sold as functional ingredients) have on gut microbiota community structure and functionality. Plant extracts were submitted to an in vitro digestion and fecal fermentation. Overall, plant extracts showed a marked inhibitory activity when compared to basal conditions. However, they also favored the growth of some bacteria such as Coprococcus and Butyricimonas, two butyrate producers. Especially interesting was tea extract which inhibited the growth of the genus Escherichia/Shigella, known to involve species related with gastrointestinal disorders. Additionally, tea extract increased the growth of Faecalibacterium, a known butyrate producer. Regarding short chain fatty acids production, while plant extracts reduced acetate production, butyrate was increased for most samples, especially tea extract. Propionate production was less affected in comparison with basal conditions. The present observational study sought to assess the dietary intake and nutritional supplementation habits of recreational cyclists and triathletes from Spain. 4,037 cyclists and triathletes completed self-report measures. Nutritional profiles were developed and differences were examined according to sporting discipline and gender. Differences between groups were compared using the Mann–Whitney U or chi-squared test. Next, micro- and macro-nutrients were grouped according to whether or not guideline intake amounts were met. The clustering of dietary habits was then examined via K-means cluster analysis. Triathletes took more supplements than cyclists (X2 = 36.489; p value = .000) and females took more supplements than males (X2 = 5.920; p value = .017). Females and triathletes reported greater protein and CHO consumption than males and cyclists, respectively. Triathletes also reported a higher consumption of total fat, MUFA, PUFA, EPA, DHA and fibre. Females and triathletes tended to consume more vitamins and minerals than males and cyclists, respectively. Two main dietary habit clusters emerged which may be used to inform nutritional interventions targeting recreational athletes not meeting nutritional requirements. A human intervention in 24 healthy volunteers was performed to test the potential health benefits of a fermented salami with a probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 and added citrus fiber. Anthropometric measurements and blood biochemistry did not show any significant differences between pre- and post-intervention during 4 weeks with a daily intake of 30 g of salami, neither with regular salami (control group) nor with reformulated salami (intervention group). However, the inflammatory markers CRP and TNFα decreased significantly after intervention, suggesting a less inflammatory environment after reformulated salami consumption. Antioxidant plasmatic markers also improved within the intervention group. Butyrate production was significantly increased after reformulated salami consumption. Gut microbiota community structure, however, was not significantly shaped by neither regular nor reformulated salami. After the intervention with probiotic salami, L. rhamnosus was detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in all samples of the intervention group but not in the control group, showing probiotic effect. ; This trial was supported by project AVANZA-S from the Spanish Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI). Genome-scale metabolic networks and constraint-based modeling approaches are promising to systematically address this complex problem. However, when applied to nutritional questions, a major issue in existing reconstructions is the limited information about compounds in the diet that are metabolized by the gut microbiota. Here, we present AGREDA, an extended reconstruction of diet metabolism in the human gut microbiota. AGREDA adds the degradation pathways of 209 compounds present in the human diet, mainly phenolic compounds, a family of metabolites highly relevant for human health and nutrition. We show that AGREDA outperforms existing reconstructions in predicting diet-specific output metabolites from the gut microbiota. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing data of faecal samples from Spanish children representing different clinical conditions, we illustrate the potential of AGREDA to establish relevant metabolic interactions between diet and gut microbiota. ; European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program through the STANCE4HEALTH project 816303

Una vez licenciado, el farmacéutico puede optar por un elevado número de salidas profesionales, tanto en el sector público al servicio de los diferentes cuerpos y administraciones, como en el sector privado. Los perfiles profesionales más frecuentes del farmacéutico pueden englobarse en 4 modalidades: Oficina de Farmacia (Farmacia Comunitaria), Farmacia Hospitalaria, Distribución e Industria Farmacéutica o Análisis y Salud Pública. A nivel de oficina de farmacia, el farmacéutico, junto a la dispensación de medicamentos, ejerce un destacado papel como asesor y consejero de salud. Las estadísticas desvelan que una de cada cuatro personas que entran en una farmacia no adquiere medicamentos, sino que sólo pide un consejo sanitario, incluyendo asesoría sobre dietas, alimentación y nutrición. Además, la aparición en los últimos años de complementos alimenticios, de venta en farmacia, hace que el farmacéutico deba formarse y comportarse como profesional en lo que respecta a temas de nutrición. Otra salida profesional, como la inspección Farmacéutica, incluye la supervisión de agua y alimentos no animales, por lo que el farmacéutico debe tener un amplio conocimiento sobre la legislación, sanidad y análisis de alimentos. Por otro lado, la industria farmacéutica incluye una amplia variedad de salidas profesionales, incluyéndose dirección técnica, control de calidad y de fabricación, gestión comercial, documentación científica o análisis. La industria agroalimentaria ha experimentado importantes cambios en las últimas décadas, exigiendo profesionales en la materia, como dietistas o analistas bromatológicos, dentro de un equipo multidisciplinar. En este sentido, el farmacéutico, a través del nuevo grado en Farmacia, debe adquirir una base sólida en el campo de la nutrición y bromatología. Así, las competencias recogidas en la Orden CIN/2137/2008 ponen de manifiesto la importancia de la formación del futuro farmacéutico en el ámbito de la alimentación. ; Once graduated, the pharmacist can choose a high number of professional skills, both in public and private sectors. The most frequent professional skills of the pharmacist can be included in 4 different fields: Pharmacy Office (Communitary Pharmacy), Hospital Pharmacy, Distribution and Pharmaceutical Industry or Analysis and Public Health. At the pharmacy office level, the pharmacist, along with the medicines dispensation, exercises an out-standing role as health adviser. The statistics reveal that 25% of the pharmacy customers do not acquire medicines, but they only ask for a sanitary advice, including nutrition and dietetic consultations. Moreover, in the last years nutritive supplements have been included within the pharmaceutical sales. Thus, the pharmacist should be formed about nutritional topics. Another professional skill, like the pharmaceutical inspection, includes drinkable water and non-animal foodstuffs analyses. Then, the pharmacist should have a wide knowledge on legislation, health and food analysis. On the other hand, the pharmaceutical industry includes a wide variety of professional skills, including technical direction, quality control, commercial management, scientific documentation or analysis. Finally, the agro-alimentary industry has experienced important changes in the last decades, demanding professionals in the matter, like dietitians or food analysts. In this sense, the pharmacist, across the new degree in Pharmacy, must acquire a solid base in the nutrition and bromatology field. Therefore, the competences gathered in the Disposition CIN / 2137/2008 reveals the importance of the formation of the future pharmacist in the nutrition area.
