ABSTRACT This paper aims to examine the political and economic consequences of the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, setting it in the context of a Gramscian interregnum. First, the dismantling of the triangular articulation of the world market that characterized the decade before 2008 is examined. Second, the global protest wave and the electoral shifts observed since 2010 are interpreted as evidence of a crisis of neoliberal hegemony. Together, the economic and hegemonic crises represent the interregnum. Last, it is argued that the fight against the pandemic may lead to the overcoming of neoliberalism.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to address some connections between Milton Friedman's classic essay on methodology and the rise of neoliberal thinking. In order to do so, it briefly reconstructs Friedman's methodological claims and reinterprets the debate about them. Emphasis is put on the tensions between instrumentalism and realism or pragmatism, and between empiricism and the defense of Chicago price theory. Then, these tensions are related to a tension that is arguably inherent in neoliberalism, between technocracy and laissez-faire. The argument presented aims to contribute to bridging the gap between the recent literature on neoliberalism and the older one on Friedman's methodological essay.

The present paper argues that the recent Brazilian crisis was related to a cyclical profit squeeze that took place between 2009 and 2014, following the long expansion that started in 2003. To do so, the cyclical trajectories of the output and the profit rate in the Brazilian economy for the period between 1996 and 2016 are examined by resorting to the framework established by Weisskopf (1979). The results indicate that profit squeezes are rare in the Brazilian economy, possibly due to the truncated character of the business cycles' expansions. However, a profit squeeze did take place in the last cycle, partly as a result of the commodities boom, which attenuated the foreign vulnerability of the economy and allowed for a longer than usual expansion.JEL classification: B50, B51,E32

As origens do modelo macroeconômico espanhol remontam ao programa de modernização levado a cabo pela ditadura de Francisco Franco a partir do final dos anos 1950, que se fundamentava no desenvolvimento de um mercado de turismo de massa para o norte da Europa e na expansão da propriedade imobiliária. As contradições dos arranjos econômicos da Comunidade Europeia e da zona do euro complicaram esse modelo já frágil, com graves efeitos para a economia e para a sociedade espanholas.
