L'essai aborde la question de l'origine du langage, telle qu'elle s'articule dès l'époque de Rousseau et Herder, à travers une comparaison entre les théories de Heidegger et de Benjamin de l'origine du sens dans une sphère prélinguistique. Elle s'oppose à la conception commune selon laquelle les deux penseurs représentent deux trajectoires philosophiques très différentes. Au lieu de cela, il insiste sur les nombreuses correspondances entre eux, à la fois historiques, personnelles et thématiques, notamment à travers leur intérêt commun pour les écrits énigmatiques de Hamann. Une question centrale est de savoir si les significations communiquées par la langue peuvent être séparées de son expression linguistique.
