The distributed permutation flowshop problem has been recently proposed as a generalization of the regular flowshop setting where more than one factory is available to process jobs. Distributed manufacturing is a common situation for large enterprises that compete in a globalized market. The problem has two dimensions: assigning jobs to factories and scheduling the jobs assigned to each factory. Despite being recently introduced, this interesting scheduling problem has attracted attention and several heuristic and metaheuristic methods have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we present a scatter search (SS) method for this problem to optimize makespan. SS has seldom been explored for flowshop settings. In the proposed algorithm we employ some advanced techniques like a reference set made up of complete and partial solutions along with other features like restarts and local search. A comprehensive computational campaign including 10 existing algorithms, together with statistical analyses, shows that the proposed scatter search algorithm produces better results than existing algorithms by a significant margin. 166 180 40 2 ; S ; Lot-streaming flow shops have important applications in different industries including textile, plastic, chemical, semiconductor and many others. This paper considers an n-job m-machine lot-streaming flow shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times under both the idling and noidling production cases. The objective is to minimize the maximum completion time or makespan. To solve this important practical problem, a novel estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA) is proposed with a job permutation based representation. In the proposed EDA, an efficient initialization scheme based on the NEH heuristic is presented to construct an initial population with a certain level of quality and diversity. An estimation of a probabilistic model is constructed to direct the algorithm search towards good solutions by taking into account both job permutation and similar blocks of jobs. A simple but effective local search is added to enhance the intensification capability. A diversity controlling mechanism is applied to maintain the diversity of the population. In addition, a speed-up method is presented to reduce the computational effort needed for the local search technique and the NEH-based heuristics. A comparative evaluation is carried out with the best performing algorithms from the literature. The results show that the proposed EDA is very effective in comparison after comprehensive computational and statistical analyses. In this work a genetic algorithm is presented for the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem in which machine and job sequence dependent setup times are considered. The proposed genetic algorithm includes a fast local search and a local search enhanced crossover operator. Two versions of the algorithm are obtained after extensive calibrations using the Design of Experiments (DOE) approach. We review, evaluate and compare the proposed algorithm against the best methods known from the literature. We also develop a benchmark of small and large instances to carry out the computational experiments. After an exhaustive computational and statistical analysis we can conclude that the proposed method shows an excellent performance overcoming the rest of the evaluated methods in a comprehensive benchmark set of instances. ; The authors are indebted to the referees and editor for the many constructive comments that have significantly improved the paper. This paper deals with a realistic cyclic scheduling problem in the food industry environment in which parallel machines are considered to process perishable jobs with given release dates, due dates and deadlines. Jobs are subject to post-production shelf life limitation and must be delivered to retailers during the corresponding time window bounded by due dates and deadlines. Both early and tardy jobs are penalized by partial weighted earliness/tardiness functions and the overall problem is to provide a cyclic schedule of minimum cost. A mixed integer programming model is proposed and a heuristic solution beside an iterated greedy algorithm is developed to generate good and feasible solutions for the problem. We consider a Distributed Assembly Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem with sequence dependent setup times and the objective of makespan minimization. The problem consists of two stages, production and assembly. The first stage comprises f identical factories, where each factory is a flowshop that produces jobs which are later assembled into final products through an identical assembly program in a second assembly stage made by a single machine. Both stages have sequence dependent setup times. This-is a realistic and complex problem and therefore, we propose two simple heuristics and two metaheuristics to solve it. A complete calibration and analysis through a Design Of Experiments (DOE) approach is carried out. In the process, important knowledge of the studied problem is obtained as well as some simplifications for the powerful Iterated Greedy methodology which results in a simpler approach with less parameters. The permutation flowshop scheduling problem has been thoroughly studied in recent decades, both from single objective as well as from multi-objective perspectives. To the best of our knowledge, little has been done regarding the multi-objective flowshop with Pareto approach when sequence dependent setup times are considered. As setup times and multi-criteria problems are important in industry, we must focus on this area. We propose a simple, yet powerful algorithm for the sequence dependent setup times flowshop problem with several criteria. The presented method is referred to as Restarted Iterated Pareto Greedy or RIPG and is compared against the best performing approaches from the relevant literature. [EN] In this work a new benchmark of hard instances for the permutation flowshop scheduling problem with the objective of minimising the makespan is proposed. The new benchmark consists of 240 large instances and 240 small instances with up to 800 jobs and 60 machines. One of the objectives of the work is to generate a benchmark which satisfies the desired characteristics of any benchmark: comprehensive, amenable for statistical analysis and discriminant when several algorithms are compared. An exhaustive experimental procedure is carried out in order to select the hard instances, generating thousands of instances and selecting the hardest ones from the point of view of a gap computed as the difference between very good upper and lower bounds for each instance. Extensive generation and computational experiments, which have taken almost six years of combined CPU time, demonstrate that the proposed benchmark is harder and with more discriminant power than the most common benchmark from the literature. Real-life production operations are subject to a large number of unexpected disruptions that may invalidate the original schedules. In these cases, rescheduling is essential to minimise the impact on the performance of the system. In this work we consider flow shop layouts that have seldom been studied in the rescheduling literature. We generate and employ three types of disruption that interrupt the original schedules simultaneously.
