; In March 2015 Wirtschaftsdienst published the article 'The Transmission Mechanism of Monetary Policy - Where is the Boost to Lending?' by Daniel Hagemann and Monika Wohlmann. Manuel Rupprecht asserts in his response that their argumentation concentrates too heavily on credit supply. He points to the importance of credit demand and the declining significance of bank loans. Hagemann and Wohlmann respond by providing detailed information on the sources of company fi nancing and state that more than half of the financing for companies in the eurozone originated from banks.

; Excessive debts of households and nonfinancial corporations have contributed significantly to the financial crisis. In order to avoid a repetition, private debt is now being monitored. The primary consideration here is the amount of debt. Its structure (i. e. instruments, maturities, creditors), however, is usually neglected, although it has a similar significance with regard to the macroeconomic implications of debt. Against this background, the paper analyses the structure of private debt at the macroeconomic level in the four large euro area countries and in the euro area as a whole since the crisis outbreak. As it turns out, noticeable changes occurred everywhere. For companies, for example, bonds as an instrument and shadow banks as creditors now play a much greater role than at the beginning of the crisis, while the link between households and banks via long-term loans has become even closer. The results inter alia underline the importance of adequate regulation of the entire financial sector and the relevance of political projects already underway (e. g. systemic stability of banks).

; Critics of the low interest rate environment claim that German households have had difficult times generating positive returns from their savings since interest rates reached levels around zero. Therefore, direct public support is increasingly being called for. This article shows that, from a macroeconomic perspective, households have in fact generated positive real returns to date. However, portfolio returns may vary among households due to differences in portfolio structure and size. In addition, aggregate portfolio returns might decrease in the years to come if nominal interest rates remain low. Regarding policy responses, it is therefore proposed to undertake measures which increase total factor productivity and improve the financial literacy of households. Both approaches promise to be more effective than direct public support of savings.

BACKGROUND: In the face of climate change, the protection of vulnerable patients from extreme climatic conditions is of growing interest to the healthcare sector and governments. Inpatients are especially susceptible to heat due to acute illness and/or chronic diseases. Their condition can be aggravated by adverse environmental factors. Installing air conditioning can be seen as an element of public health adaptation because it was shown to improve mortality rates of hospital patients experiencing hot temperatures. Still, the mediating factors and resulting health effects are largely unknown. METHOD: The PRISMA-ScR guideline was followed for this scoping review. Available evidence on the health effects of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) and fans was searched in Medline, Embase and the Cochrane Library. The focus of the search strategy was on inpatients of the hospital. Grey literature was screened on 14 relevant websites. English and German publications were eligible without restrictions on publication date. Results were charted according to the categories population, intervention, control and outcome together with a qualitative description. RESULTS: The review process yielded eleven publications of which seven were issued after 2003. Seven were clinical trials, three cross-sectional studies and one was a case report. The publications described the installation of HVAC on general wards and in intensive care units. Main topics were heat stress protection and support of thermoregulation, but also the rewarming of hypothermic patients. HVAC use resulted in a recovery effect shown by improved vital signs, reduced cardiac stress, accelerated recuperation and greater physical activity. This protective effect was demonstrated by a shorter hospital stay for patients with respiratory disease and a reduction of mortality for heat illness patients. CONCLUSION: This scoping review summarises the fragmented evidence on health effects of HVAC and fan utilisation for inpatients. Installing HVAC has the potential ...
