Discusses the current difficulties & potential benefits of further communication & cooperation between cultural studies & social movement politics. The last half century has been characterized by an academic rediscovery of varied mechanisms of cultural value, history, & nature. This recognition has led to a rejection of political ties within literary & cultural studies & has prompted academics to focus on the exclusions & silences sustained by past & current cultural symbols & expressions. Further, postmodern theoretical skepticism has challenged political projects & emphasized the deconstructive nature of cultural studies. Although this revolution within academia & the establishment of a critical counterculture is praised, it is suggested that the deconstructive criticism of the past & present has not been accompanied by a comprehensive & positive vision of future goals & the political means of achieving these goals. Further, cultural studies must pursue not only the deconstructive but also the constructive nature of past social movements, political outcomes, & cultural symbols. T. Sevier

This book scrupulously investigates the reason for this alliance and the sources of its tensions, providing a lucid and succinct introduction to some of the subject's central concepts and concerns.
