The shift in certain episodes of collective action towards the communications landscape and, more specifically, towards the new technology and digital media space, has led to the emergence of a complex variety of sociological phenomena, challenging some of the legacy of theoretical assumptions about the sociology of social movements. Moreover, the types of interaction and intertwining between these social movements and communication technology networks depends on multiple factors. Analysing them from this perspective allows historical periods to be distinguished and classified analytically. Similarly, the well known fact of the emergence of new forms of collective action and unconventional political participation entails the development of research methods that depart in some respects from those traditionally used. In this paper we aim to present some of the methodological tools of this "virtualization of political protest", such as Audience Studies or Virtual Ethnography, which are valid sociological research methods to analyse some contemporary cases of collective action. One of the particularities of social movements using new digital media is the need to rethink the methodological approach to their comprehension due to their sporadic, dynamic and fluid nature. ; El desplazamiento de cierta parte de los episodios de acción colectiva al terreno comunicativo y, más en concreto, al espacio generado por las nuevas tecnologías y los medios digitales ha supuesto un fenómeno sociológicamente complejo y variado, que cuestiona algunos de los viejos axiomas que arrastraba la sociología de los movimientos sociales. Además, las tipologías de interacción o imbricación entre dichos movimientos y las redes comunicativas tecnológicas dependen de múltiples factores, lo que nos permitirá en este trabajo realizar una cierta periodización histórica y una clasificación analítica de las mismas. Asimismo, este hecho notorio de emergencia de nuevas formas de acción colectiva y de participación política no convencional implica la utilización de metodologías y técnicas de estudio que se apartan en algunos aspectos de las tradicionales. En esta presentación se pretenden mostrar algunas de las herramientas metodológicas de esta "virtualización de la acción política" tales como los estudios de audiencias digitales o la etnografía virtual, métodos de producción de información sociológica válida para el análisis de ciertos casos de acción colectiva contemporánea. Una de las peculiaridades de los movimientos sociales o de la acción política enmarcados en los "nuevos medios digitales" supone también el replanteamiento de las formas efectivas de acceso metodológico a los mismos, dado su carácter esporádico y fugaz.

Este artículo explora la evolución de la contienda política en la España del siglo xxi a través de un análisis de acontecimientos de protesta (Protest Event Analysis) basado en una nueva y amplia base de datos (n = 4.062). El análisis permite distinguir diversos ciclos de protesta y discutir cambios y continuidades en la acción de los movimientos sociales. Mientras la protesta anterior a la Gran Recesión gira en torno a conflictos en muchos casos globales, a partir de entonces tiende a concentrarse en el nivel nacional y local en cuanto a espacios, demandas y objetivos. Partidos y sindicatos se muestran todavía relevantes al mismo tiempo que surgen nuevos actores y se revitalizan otros en una dinámica de movimiento/contramovimiento. El artículo analiza estas y otras características de los ciclos de protesta.

In recent decades, the spread of digitalization has transformed the processes of political participation and citizen mobilization in diverse and unexpected ways. Contrary to what was initially expected, the consequences of the technologization of the political field have been very complex. The greatest innovations have taken place in the space of unconventional political participation, through a set of technologically mediated interventions full of light and shadows. This article offers a sample of some of the emerging digital political practices that have appeared in recent years. The objective is not to position oneself in a debate about diagnoses or moral evaluations but to map the digital tools for political participation without falling into a techno-deterministic, conciliatory or celebratory perspective. Rather, it aims to analyze different intervention models, both successful and unsuccessful, placing them in their historical context and assessing their strengths and weaknesses. ; En las últimas décadas, la difusión de la digitalización ha transformado los procesos de participación política y movilización ciudadana de formas diversas e inesperadas. Frente a lo esperado inicialmente, las consecuencias de la tecnologización del campo político han sido muy complejas. Las mayores innovaciones han tenido lugar en el espacio de la participación política no convencional, a través de un conjunto de intervenciones mediadas tecnológicamente llenas de claroscuros. Este artículo ofrece una muestra de algunas de las prácticas políticas digitales emergentes que han aparecido en los últimos años. El objetivo no es posicionarse en un debate sobre diagnósticos o valoraciones morales sino cartografiar las herramientas digitales para la participación política sin caer en una perspectiva tecnodeterminista, conciliadora o celebratoria. Más bien aspira a analizar distintos modelos de intervención, tanto los exitosos como los fracasados, ubicándolos en su contexto histórico y evaluando sus fortalezas y debilidades.

This article explores the daily activity of the cyberfeminist communities in Spain from the study of social media as spaces for identity formation and repertoires of political action. Starting from the analytical framework of social movements, cyberfeminism and its relationship with technologies, the article tries to understand the use of digital spaces for collective action. From the foundations of virtual ethnography, four reference communities on Facebook are analyzed (according to institutionality and existence of offline base) to assess how discourses against gender violence are articulated, as well as the participation and groupings that coexist in these platforms. As a result, six different effects are identified in the communication of these digital groups, concluding that their deliberative dimension regarding gender violence is scarce and insufficient in the era of Web 2.0. ; Este artículo indaga en la actividad diaria de las comunidades ciberfeministas en España a partir del estudio de los medios sociales como espacios de conformación de identidad y repertorios de acción política. Partiendo del marco analítico de los movimientos sociales, el ciberfeminismo y su relación con las tecnologías, el artículo intenta comprender el uso de espacios digitales para la acción colectiva. Desde los fundamentos de la etnografía virtual, se analizan cuatro comunidades de referencia en Facebook (según institucionalidad y existencia de base offline) para valorar cómo se articulan los discursos contra la violencia de género, así como la participación y la grupalidad que coexisten en dicha plataforma. Como resultado, se identifican seis efectos distintos en la comunicación de dichos grupos digitales concluyendo que su dimensión deliberativa en torno a la violencia de género es escasa e insuficiente en plena era de la Web 2.0.

This article examines the relationship between social movements' digital democratic innovations and political parties through a case study based on the involvement of 15M activists in the creation and development of new political parties in Spain. By analyzing the impact of certain technological activist groups on the implementation of the movement's demands in terms of mechanisms of participation and deliberation in the new parties through the use of digital technologies, we aim to evaluate the activists' contribution to the transformation of formal politics and the deepening of democracy. In this sense, we explore the role of so-called 'tech activists' as mediators of political participation, and the digital repertoire of action they use. Sources used include various documents and websites as well as interviews with key informants and notes from participant observation in meetings and assemblies. ; Este artículo analiza las innovaciones democráticas provenientes del campo de los movimientos sociales y su relación con los partidos políticos a partir de un caso de estudio centrado en la participación de activistas del 15M en la creación y el desarrollo de nuevos partidos políticos en España. Nuestra intención es evaluar la aportación de los activistas a la transformación de la política formal y la profundización de la democracia a través del análisis del impacto de determinados grupos en la implementación de las demandas del movimiento en forma de mecanismos digitales de participación y deliberación en los nuevos partidos. En este sentido, el artículo explora el papel de los llamados 'activistas tecnológicos' como mediadores de la participación política y el repertorio digital de acción empleado por ellos. Las fuentes analizadas incluyen diversos documentos y páginas web, entrevistas a informantes clave y la observación participante de reuniones y asambleas.

The Spanish 15M movement (also known as the Indignados) was very critical of political parties and the current system of political representation. However, the protest cycle has evolved into a growing and complex process of institutionalization in which activist have been participating in the creation and development of a number of new parties (Partido X, Ganemos and Podemos). This paper analyzes the role played by new technologies in this process. The basic hypothesis is that the extensive use of digital tools, which encourage participation and deliberation in the creation and development of these new parties, in some ways reproduces essential values and practices of the movement, thus facilitating the identification between the 15M activists and the parties. In this way, the transition between movement and party has been conditioned by, among other things, a component of technological mediation, generating an environment of horizontal deliberation, participation distributed and decentralized structure. The use of these tools has been accompanied by the development of a certain technophile frame that stresses the potential of new technologies for social and political change. Thus, the classical notions of representation or participation are redrawn allowing a smooth evolution from the squares to the Parliaments. This article examines the construction of technophiles frameworks, which influenced by the presence of free software and open source, help us to understand the organization of the new movement-parties and the transition between the different forms of collective action. Likewise, some of these digital tools are mentioned and outlined and the role that they have played in order to forge new organization models for these movement–parties are described. ; El movimiento 15M se caracterizaba, entre otras cosas, por una fuerte crítica a los partidos políticos y el sistema actual de representación política. Sin embargo, el ciclo de movilización ha derivado en un proceso de institucionalización creciente y complejo en el que los activistas del movimiento han participado de manera relativamente visible y continuada en el surgimiento y el desarrollo de nuevos partidos (Partido X, Ganemos y Podemos). Este artículo analiza el papel desempeñado por las nuevas tecnologías en este proceso bajo la hipótesis de que la apropiación de herramientas digitales diseñadas para deliberar, interaccionar o generar formas diversas de participación política en los nuevos partidos reproduce valores y prácticas esenciales del movimiento, allanando con ello el camino para una identificación entre los activistas y los partidos. La mediación tecnológica ha modulado el paso del movimiento al partido al generar un entorno de deliberación horizontal, participación distribuida y estructura descentralizada que reduce las diferencias visibles entre ambos. El desarrollo de las herramientas digitales se ha visto acompañado a su vez de un cambio en los marcos de interpretación de los movimientos sociales con respecto a la tecnología como factor político. De esta forma, las nociones de representación o participación clásicas quedan redibujadas permitiendo una transición suave entre las plazas y los parlamentos. El artículo rastrea la construcción de marcos tecnófilos que, influidos por la presencia del software libre y el código abierto, ayudan a entender la organización de los nuevos partidos-movimiento y la transición entre las diversas formas de acción colectiva. Partiendo del marco analítico de los movimientos sociales, el ciberfeminismo y su relación con las tecnologías, el artículo intenta comprender el uso de espacios digitales para la acción colectiva. Social inequality is a central theme in sociology study plans (both in research and education), but it is often one of the most difficult topics to teach. This article presents an innovative student-centered strategy for teaching social inequality that uses a survey to collect data on students' socioeconomic characteristics and perceptions of inequality. To stimulate reflection and discussion on the social mechanisms that reproduce inequality, this information is subsequently presented to them in conjunction with a comparative analysis to general population data. The exercise seeks to make social inequality less abstract for students by involving them in the research process and by using data relative to their own lives and families. Ultimately, the strategy boosts students' sociological imagination and their capacity for critical thinking by encouraging them to see the connections between individual biographies and broader social forces.
