IBM is no longer the straight-laced, top-to-bottom, rules-oriented employer it once was. As Big Blue has stirred to reinvent itself, the cultural changes have been accompanied by changes in compensation strategy so that IBM can attract and retain the best talent, especially scarce hightech talent (the "People in Black"). IBM scrapped its traditional salary grades and its old job evaluation system in favor of a leaner, simplier band structure, introduced pay at risk tied to achieving business objectives, and gave line managers responsibility for managing pay.

Armed conflict and internal displacement of persons create new health challenges for women in Africa. To outline the research literature on this population, we conducted a review of studies exploring the health of internally displaced persons (IDP) women in Africa. In collaboration with a health research librarian and a review team, a search strategy was designed that identified 31 primary research studies with relevant evidence. Studies on the health of displaced women have been conducted in South- Central Africa, including Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) ; and in Eastern, East central Africa, and Western Africa, including Eritrea, Uganda, and Sudan, Cô ; te d&rsquo ; Ivoire, and Nigeria. We identified violence, mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and malaria and as key health areas to explore, and observed that socioeconomic power shifts play a crucial role in predisposing women to challenges in all four categories. Access to reproductive health services was influenced by knowledge, geographical proximity to health services, spousal consent, and affordability of care. As well, numerous factors affect the mental health of internally displaced women in Africa: excessive care-giving responsibilities, lack of financial and family support to help them cope, sustained experiences of violence, psychological distress, family dysfunction, and men&rsquo ; s chronic alcoholism. National and regional governments must recommit to institutional restructuring and improved funding allocation to culturally appropriate health interventions for displaced women.

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges to prison officers and inmates alike. Since it impacted all areas of the working and living environment, it was assumed that the social climate in prison changed as a result. As part of the Corona Behind Bars project, this study had two objectives: first, to compare how the social climate (Essen Climate Evaluation Schema) is perceived by inmates (N = 956) and prison officers (N = 502) as a result of the pandemic. Second, to analyze the impact of the burden of contact restrictions between inmates and prison officers on their respective perceptions of the social climate. In line with the differences between inmates and prison officers reported in the literature, inmates reported significantly higher values on the dimension experienced safety than did prison officers, while prison officers reported significantly higher values on the dimension therapeutic hold. No significant difference was found for the dimension inmate cohesion. Compared to norm values both the prison officers and the inmates rated the social climate as clearly below average. The moderation analysis revealed an interaction of status group × burden of contact restriction: The impact of the burden of contact restriction on social climate perception was more pronounced for inmates than for prison officers. Overall, the results suggest that the perception of the social climate was adversely affected by the pandemic for the prison officers and the inmates. However, the specific factors contributing to this deterioration appear to be group-specific.

Nigeria is a significant contributor to the global forcibly displaced population. The majority of this displacement is related to Boko Haram and herdsmen attacks in Northern Nigeria. A growing body of research has started to investigate issues surrounding protection concerns for the internally displaced who have been uprooted by these uprisings and attacks. Importantly, research is also starting to engage with issues of sexual violence and unwanted pregnancies associated with the conflict and displacement. This article aims to develop this work further by examining intersecting factors shaping the reproductive health experiences of women internally displaced by the Boko Haram and Herdsmen crisis in Northern Nigeria. To this end, a critical ethnography study involving in-depth interviews with 29 internally displaced women and five service providers in Northern Nigeria was completed between May 2019 to September 2019. Three major intersected subjects pertaining to women's reproductive health access were observed. These were: (1) normative perceptions and the prevalence of urogenital infections; (2) decisions made on birthplaces and number of births; (3) income and accessibility to care. The findings illustrate the interrelated economic and sociocultural factors that constrain access to reproductive health for internally displaced women.
