Caciques. Una revision teorica sobre el control politico local
In: Revista mexicana de ciencias políticas y sociales, Volume 30, Issue 117-118, p. 107-141

Mexican caciques are traditional local chieftains who exercise political & economic power parallel to formally constituted authorities. It is disputed that the caciques are an independent power with which the state must ally in order to govern in certain districts. The power of the caciques, in fact, depends on their access to higher levels of authority. The caciques are discussed in terms of a historical process of centralization & direct administrative control by the state. 3 Diagrams. S. Karganovic
