AbstractThe disgraced British prime minister, Boris Johnson, was forced to resign by his own backbench MPs on 7 July 2022 (effective from 6 September) in complete denial that he had done anything wrong. Optimists might argue that this shows the strength of the British political system; that a way was found to throw out a proven rascal, thus providing the opportunity for a restoration of 'normal politics'. In my view, this optimism is misplaced. Boris Johnson's behaviour, mirroring that of his populist role model, Donald Trump, has raised a number of serious questions about the continued successful functioning of the UK's unwritten constitution. The article reviews the character of Johnson's constitutional violations during his period as prime minister. Using data from a recent survey of UK voters, it then explores the damaging effect that his period in office has had on UK public opinion. Despite his removal from office, Johnson retains a hard core of support across the wider electorate and, in particular, among grassroots Conservative supporters and party members. These supporters remain largely unaware of Johnson's constitutional crimes, and where they do know about them, they forgive them. This creates the real danger either that Johnson may at some future date return to office to repeat his offences, or that a similarly populist successor might deploy the same anti‐democratic devices that Johnson himself used in his desperate attempts to cling to power.

Deliberative Polls simulate public opinion in a given policy domain when members of the relevant mass public are better informed about the issues involved. This article reports on the results of a three-day Deliberative Poll, conducted before the June 2009 European Parliament elections, to evaluate the effects of deliberation on a representative sample of EU citizens. Findings show that, compared with a control group, deliberators changed their views significantly on immigration (becoming more liberal), climate change (becoming greener) and the EU itself (becoming more pro-European). Five different explanations of why deliberation appears to work are tested: sampling bias, increased political knowledge, discussion quality, small group social conformity pressure and the influence of other Deliberative Poll actors, but none is satisfactory.
In: Sanders , D 2011 , ' Navigational assistance for wheelchair users ' Journal of Intelligent Mobility , vol 14 , no. 4 , pp. 254-256 .
Previous low cost systems of navigational assistance for disabled wheelchair users have provided simple obstacle and collision avoidance, or have followed a pre-defined fixed route defined by a white line or a buried wire. Other research has used complex high cost multi-sensor mode systems resembling industrial, military or space exploration applications. Such systems have required modification of the operating environment and have provided little overall control by the user. Whilst proving the technical feasibility their cost and complexity has not resulted in practical and affordable solutions for the wheelchair user. The purpose of the present study was to bridge the gap between these two previous areas of research and to provide navigational assistance at an affordable cost.
