Putting capability management into practice requires both a solid theoretical foundation and realistic approaches. This book introduces a development methodology that integrates business and information system development and run-time adjustment based on the concept of capability by presenting the main findings of the CaaS project - the Capability-Driven Development (CDD) methodology, the architecture and components of the CDD environment, examples of real-world applications of CDD, and aspects of CDD usage for creating business value and new opportunities. Capability thinking characterizes an organizational mindset, putting capabilities at the center of the business model and information systems development. It is expected to help organizations and in particular digital enterprises to increase flexibility and agility in adapting to changes in their economic and regulatory environments. Capability management denotes the principles of how capability thinking should be implemented in an organization and the organizational means. This book is intended for anyone who wants to explore the opportunities for developing and managing context-dependent business capabilities and the supporting business services. It does not require a detailed understanding of specific development methods and tools, although some background knowledge and experience in information system development is advisable. The individual chapters have been written by leading researchers in the field of information systems development, enterprise modeling and capability management, as well as practitioners and industrial experts from these fields.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Perspectives in Business Informatics Research, BIR 2022, which took place in Rostock, Germany, in September 2022. The central theme of BIR 2022 was "Business Informatics for Sustainable Innovation". Achieving sustainability requires a multi-perspective approach taking organizational, economic, and technical aspects into account. In a world of cloud computing, social networks and big data, additional challenges for business informatics and the design of information systems architectures are introduced. To deal with these challenges, a close cooperation of researchers from different disciplines such as information systems, business informatics, and computer science is required. The 14 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 41 submissions. They were organized in topical sections as follows: Information system development; modeling methods and assistance; applications and technologies; and digital business.

This dissertation considers three different studies that handle Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) in hospitals. Study 1 uses the Reasoned Action Approach by questioning hospital visitors and employees about their intention to use IPS in hospitals. Study 2 reviews IPS in hospitals. Study 3 is based on the results of the first two studies. It handles expert interviews that were conducted with different hospitals and IPS developers to evaluate the determined propositions. Then, the insights were used to conduct and evaluate experiments by testing an ultrasound-based IPS for hospitals.

IT operations introduce IT self-services to reduce the workload of their personnel in service production and delivery. However, this workload reduction is not self-evident and therefore IT operations must be supported at designing effective IT self-services. The result of the research is a method that guides IT operations at devolving service tasks in IT services. This method is named DESERV IT and includes four method components encompassing a joint meta-model, a visual notation for designing IT services, and procedural recommendations.

Predictive maintenance has the potential to improve the reliability of production and service provisioning. However, there is little knowledge about the proper implementation of predictive maintenance in research and practice. Therefore, we conducted a multi-case study and investigated underlying conditions and technological aspects for implementing a predictive maintenance system and where it leads to. We found that predictive maintenance initiatives are triggered by severe impacts of failures on revenue and profit. Furthermore, successful predictive maintenance initiatives require that pre-conditions are fulfilled: Data must be available and accessible. Very important is also the support by the management. We identified four factors important for the implementation of predictive maintenance. The integration of data is highly facilitated by Cloud-based mechanisms. The detection of events is enabled by advanced analytics. The execution of predictive maintenance operations is supported by data-driven process automation and visualization.

The dissertation addresses implementation aspects of innovation activities in tourism network organizations on three levels of participation: at the entrepreneur-ecosystem level, the Destination Management Organization-entrepreneur level, and the inter-organizational level. The three research publications are framed by a synopsis, developing propositions for the governance of a tourism innovation project network.

Effective self-management is crucial for a workforce with high levels of self-responsibility. Digital solutions enable highly scalable yet personalized support in everyday life. In particular, mobile devices and sensors enable new forms of individual tracking and personalized feedback. This dissertation investigates how technology can promote healthy and productive self-management. It explores the design space relevant for engineering occupational self-management assistance and showcases application areas. Especially, the support in managing personal energy as a key variable is demonstrated.
