This paper looks at trust and confidence in people and institutions in eight of the countries that have undergone transformation since the breakup of the Soviet Union. While the questions are not identical to those asked in previous research in post-Soviet societies, our findings are comparable—greatest trust in relatives and friends, less in people in general and least in politicians and institutions of social control. Levels of trust are not high, and there are interesting differences between the countries, giving support to the view that trust and confidence are eroded by sudden and dramatic negatively perceived change.

Customers′ experience of service encounters remains an area blessed
with a rich folklore but little fundamental understanding. Reports on a
pilot study for an exploration of women′s experiences of public houses,
which used idiographic methods on a small sample of middle‐class women:
role repertory grids, "critical‐incident" questionnaires,
individual comparatively unstructured interviews and group
"focus" interviews. Group interviews were most useful for
coming quickly to a consensus picture, and the critical incident
questionnaires allowed extreme examples of good and bad practice to be
explored. The other two methods produced rich data on the variations
within and between women′s experiences. Concludes that there is
considerable variation in what women are looking to find in pubs, but
that they agree on their dislike of male‐dominated atmospheres in which
they are harassed or made to feel unwelcome.

Evidence suggests that images of social class may mediate voting intentions. National survey data collected in England in 1988/89 include both objective data (eg, income, actual class, gender) & data on attitudinal variables for perceived characteristics of class, views of class structure, & class values. Here, discriminant functional analysis is used to predict party preference, removing objective factors in order to examine the additional influence of attitudinal variables. Findings were generally tentative, though small amounts of variance were attributable to some attitudinal variables (eg, self-assignment, views of income/occupation, class stereotyes). 5 Tables, 16 References.
