The literature on Simón Bolívar's Jamaica Letter has underestimated the importance of Hispanophobia. Generally this aspect of the text has been regarded as purely rhetorical and circumstantial. However, this element is of central importance to the text, because virtually every idea in the essay is closely tied up with this hatred towards Spain. Without Hispanophobia, the Jamaica Letter would simply cease to exist. In this work, I will try to show the three cornerstones of this enmity created by Bolívar: criticism of the Conquest and the Colony, the time gap undermining the Spanish Empire and the invention of this Empire as the worst tyranny in history, an issue to which I will devote particular attention. By means of this exaggeration, Bolívar offers an unintentional justification of every political disaster or constitutional failure. ; La bibliografía sobre la Carta de Jamaica de Simón Bolívar ha tendido a minusvalorar la importancia del odio a España. Generalmente se ha considerado esta dimensión del texto como puramente retórica y circunstancial. Sin embargo, la importancia de este elemento es central, pues, prácticamente no existe idea en este ensayo que no se vincule de modo estrecho con el odio a España. Sin hispanofobia simplemente no existiría la Carta de Jamaica. En este trabajo, me propongo reconstruir los tres pilares de esta enemistad que Bolívar recrea: la crítica a la Conquista y a la Colonia, el desfase temporal de España y la invención de España como peor tiranía de la historia. Daré una especial importancia a este último punto, ya que debido a esta exageración, Bolívar ofrece involuntariamente una justificación a cualquier desastre político y constitucional.

One of the most common topics in Gracián's bibliography is to study the influence of machiavellism in his works. It has been usual to stress Gracián's machiavellism. In this large bibliography, more attention has been paid to describe Gracián as a machiavellian than to study how particular ideas and works of Machiavelli are present in his works. In this article, I want to describe how El político Don Fernando el Católico includes ideas from The prince, the Discourses and The life of Castruccio Castracani, a work neglected by Gracián's scholars. Among others, the ideas that Gracián shares with Machiavelli are the following: the theory of occasion and riscontro, the division of the politician character between impulsive and prudent, the criterion to evaluate political succes and the method to write a political biography. The result of my research shows that Gracián, instead of being a purely machiavellian thinker, shares with Machiavelli a great number of ideas, many of which have nothing to do with the immoral Machiavelli. ; Uno de los objetos más habituales de la bibliografía sobre Gracián consiste en el estudio de la presencia del maquiavelismo en su obra. Ha sido frecuente considerar al jesuita aragonés como un autor proclive al maquiavelismo. Además, en esta extensa bibliografía, se ha privilegiado el estudio general del maquiavelismo frente a la recepción de ideas concretas de Maquiavelo en el corpus de Gracián. En este artículo, quiero estudiar el modo como El político Don Fernando el Católico incluye ideas de El príncipe, los Discursos y La vida de Castruccio Castracani, lo que constituye una completa novedad bibliográfica. Entre otras, las ideas que Gracián comparte con Maquiavelo son las siguientes: la teoría de la ocasión y del riscontro, la división de los políticos entre impulsivos y cautos, el criterio para evaluar las acciones de un político y el modo de escribir una biografía política. De este modo, más que un autor maquiavélico, Gracián aparece retratado como un autor que comparte con el Secretario florentino una gran número de convicciones, muchas de ellas completamente alejadas del Maquiavelo inmoral.
