RELIGION, CASTE AND COMMUNITY: IDENTITY SUBSTANTIATION THROUGH 'MAILE' CONGREGATIONS2 AMONG THE DORGAS OF JAMMU AND KASHMIR (INDIA)
In: Politikologija religije: Politics and religion = Politologie des religions, Band 3, Heft 1, S. 49-72
ISSN: 1820-659X
In the postmodern world, the so-called 'pre-established' identities have become questionable in the senses of belonging to well-defined communities with stable self-perception and also with recognized codes of behavior. The renewed interest in identity and the construction of knowledge from the 1990s onwards has provoked a shift from considering communities as 'given' to investigating the power relations and discourses by which they are constantly defined and redefined. Substantiating the domain of religion as one where 'magic bullet' explanations are rife, the political connotation of 'identity' vis-à-vis religion also links contemporary religion to identity. In India, the varieties of social collectivities such as castes, religion, clan, communities etc have tended to be shaped in the name of ethnic and social identities. Thus it is high time to study the status of religio-cultural practices in the modern world and to identify their relevance in contemporary society. This paper not only attempts to highlight the 'maile' congregation (annual community gathering) through 'kul-deity' worship as adaptation and continuity of traditional elements in the modern circumstances but also tries to extract the political dimension of the phenomenon.
Pathways of Modernity and Democracy in India: A Critique of Ambedkar's Prophecy
In: Contemporary voice of Dalit, Band 13, Heft 1, S. 8-18
ISSN: 2456-0502
The era of modernity is analysed from the point of view of the assumptions underlying the development of this formation controlled by reason, progress, rationality, knowledge and technology. Paradoxically, we cannot deny that in colonial and post-colonial times, Indian society suffered from the combined effects of religious bigotry, patriarchy and colonialism. Ambedkar is to be seen as a man of international stature rather than in the traditional Indian framework. The philosophy of Ambedkar provides a critique of Hinduism and also an alternative to the Hindu religious system through protests like religious conversion. He speaks not only against the caste system but also against the tyranny of the casteism of high castes. It is argued that his contributions need to be observed as modernist rather than as reductionist understanding as a messiah of Dalits.
Exclusion and Health Status of Scheduled Caste Women in India: An Overview
Indian society characterized by high degree of social stratification and inequality based on caste, religion, gender and social origin which is determined that certain group are wholly or partially excluded from some basic right. Health is a major indicator of exclusion where certain individual or group are excluded on the basis of their caste. Women's health is profoundly affected by the caste and the status which wasgiven by society as a whole. Women have been historically discriminated group especially Scheduled Caste (SC) women. In patriarchal society, they faced exclusion and discrimination in term of Social, economic, Political Cultural Rights. Such discrimination leads to anxiety and stress in SC women which affect their health. The caste system declares SC women to be intrinsically impure and 'untouchable' (Dumont:1998) which sanctions social exclusion and exploitation. From a human right perspective "All citizen should receive adequate health, education, food and nutrition, housing, participation, equal treatment and freedom from discrimination and violence.†but situation is different with regard to Scheduled Caste, especially SC women whose health concerns need to be understood and researched due to intense form of exclusion. Through secondary source of data (Literature & NFHS,) this paper attempts to understand the linkage between Social Exclusion and health deprivation of SC's Women in India in general and also draw attention to the role of Caste-based Discrimination and exclusion regarding to health in increasing exposure and vulnerability to risk, limiting access to health care and information, and influencing health outcomes.

RELIGIOUS LANDSCAPE, LOW CASTE HINDUS AND THE IDENTITY POLITICS: CONFIGURATION OF SOCIO-RELIGIOUS SPACE FOR WEAKER SECTIONS IN JAMMU CITY, J&K (INDIA)
In: Politikologija religije: Politics and religion = Politologie des religions, Band 7, Heft 1, S. 93-111
ISSN: 1820-659X
Dawning of a new century has not been accompanied by the eclipse of religiosity among individuals and in public culture rather because of disenchantment with our increasingly rationalized society, religion continues to provide meaning and intertwine daily social, economic, and political activity of human world. Alongside, the popular religiosity is an important contemporary trend encompassing the world religions. The study of religion as a force in people's adaptation to and creation of landscape is certainly a proper and important endeavor in the field of sociology of religion. The present work aims at exploring the spatial expansion of subaltern groups in urban setting; socio-religious mobility among lower caste Hindus and the creation of sacred and secular space vis-à-vis higher Hindu caste groups in a sacred traditional Indian city. The broader findings reflect the creation of religious spaces and also the lower caste Hindu identity assertion through these places. The modern forces and the pace of urbanization had diluted the air-tight compartmentalized segregation of the weaker section and paved them way for secular living with the other high caste groups. It had not only brought democratic dwelling space but also provided them dignity with the new level of assertion.
