Media framing facilitates people's understanding of a threat and affects one's emotional reaction. It therefore plays a vital role in both individual and societal responses to a public health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a combination of conceptual metaphor analysis and qualitative frame analysis, this article examines how three Austrian newspapers framed the initial national outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020. The results show that at that early stage, media coverage was primarily concerned with the national government's political actions to contain the disease. Only a few articles framed the situation in terms of personal experiences and possible economic or social consequences. As has been the case in research reporting on other health crises, metaphors of war, journeys, and natural disasters were used to conceptualize the coronavirus pandemic. Yet, overall, the tone remained neutral, as the media framing was clearly aimed at passing on information and conveying a sense of urgency while at the same time trying to avoid scare tactics.

In diesem Forschungsvorhaben wurden journalistische Qualitätskriterien sowie Darstellungsformen in Bild und Ton des YouTube-Kanals FPÖ-TV mit der Nachrichtensendung ZIB 1 verglichen. Die Forschung ergab, dass sich die Produzentinnenund Produzentenvon FPÖ-TV zwar einige Qualitätskriterien zunutze machen, um den Eindruck eines Nachrichtenformats zu erwecken. Kriterien, die sachlichen und reflektierten Journalismus gewährleisten, finden aber kaum Anwendung. ; Politics has opened up to the Internet public and uses "[] the net as a means for simple and direct communication." (Grunwald 2006: S. 14, translation) Political parties present their own views directly and unfiltered via social media channels, which leads to a one-sided representation of facts. For this research project a comparison of the YouTube channel FPÖ-TV and the news programme ZIB 1 was undertaken, with regards to journalistic quality criteria as well as the presentation of images and sound. The research shows that the producers of FPÖ-TV use some quality criteria to create the impression of a news format. However, criteria that guarantee factual and reflected journalism hardly apply. ; (VLID)3860286
