Die lange zurückreichende imperiale Prägung Österreichs führte zu einer starken Binnenmigration der nach Sprache, Ethnie und Religion so diversen Bevölkerung. Imperiale Autoritäten blickten oftmals auf eine wiederkehrende berufliche Migration, die dazu führte, dass die Ehefrau einer anderen Nationalität entstammte und die Kinder in den unterschiedlichsten Gegenden zur Welt kamen und zur Schule gingen. Dies traf nicht nur, aber insbesondere auf die Militärangehörigen zu, weshalb sie es auch waren, denen der Begriff Tornisterkind in erster Linie zugeschrieben wurde. Dieser Beitrag zeigt am Begriff "Tornisterkind", wie sehr imperiale Biographien durch kollektive Diskurse geformt wurden, wie diese Diskurse das Bild von Imperium mitgestalteten und wie gleichzeitig verschiedene Bezugsrahmen miteinander konkurrierten. Zu diesen Bezugsrahmen zählten "Nation" und "Imperium", vorangegangene Epochen ebenso wie zeitgenössische politische Verhältnisse und Wunschvorstellungen für die Zukunft. Auch die Rolle des Militärs wandelte sich mehrmals im Laufe des in diesem Beitrag untersuchten Zeitraums von mehr als einhundert Jahren. Die Quellenanalyse ergab vor diesem Hintergrund folgende Periodisierung der Begriffsentwicklung: das "Vormärz-Tornisterkind" (bis 1867), das "Ausgleichs-Tornisterkind" (1867-1918) und das "Umbruchs-Tornisterkind" (ab 1918).

The classificatory efforts that accompanied the modernization of the Habsburg state inadvertently helped establish, promote, and perpetuate national categories of identification, often contrary to the intentions of the Habsburg bureaucracy. The state did not create nations, but its classification of languages made available some ethnolinguistic identity categories that nationalists used to make political claims. The institutionalization of these categories also made them more relevant, especially as nationalist movements simultaneously worked toward the same goal. Yet identification with a nation did not follow an algorithmic logic, in the beginning of the twentieth century, sometimes earlier, various nationalisms could undoubtedly mobilize large numbers of people in Austria-Hungary, but people still had agency and nationness remained contingent and situational.

Since its publication, Pieter M. Judson's history of the Habsburg Empire: A New History has sparked discussion and debate as a result of its novel reframing of the relationship between nationalism and empire in the Central European polity. Judson offers a new narrative of a vibrant and adaptive state that had the ability to balance empire and nationality, and thus was not doomed to fail, as has been one of the well-worn interpretations of the empire. The contributors to this debate come to the book from different regional and academic standpoints, and take on a number of key issues raised by the book: the role of nationality in the empire; the nature of Habsburg imperial rule within the broader context of European empire building; the relationship of Hungary within the larger empire; and the position of the Habsburg Empire within European history as a whole. Together, these perspectives shed light on core issues raised by the book as well as offer reflections on the future of Habsburg studies.
