Der Verfasser zeigt, wie die soziologische Theorie der Gegenwart zwischen zwei "Schreckensmännern" zu vermitteln sucht, nämlich einerseits dem solipsistischen "homo oeconomicus" und andererseits dem völlig sozial determinierten "homo sociologicus". Für die politische Theorie entsteht aus dieser Aufgabenstellung die Vorgabe, einerseits die soziale Vermittlung von Emotionen denken zu können, ohne andererseits den Anspruch auf so etwas wie emotionale Autonomie aufgeben zu müssen. Als diesbezüglich hilfreiche Alternative zu jenen beiden klassischen Akteurmodellen bietet sich dasjenige des "emotional man" an mit seinen Untermodellen, konzeptuellen Erweiterungs- und disziplinären Anschlussmöglichkeiten. To understand the profound changes in the modes of public political debate over the past decade, this volume develops a new conception of public spheres as spaces of resonance emerging from the power of language to affect and to ascribe and instill collective emotion. Political discourse is no longer confined to traditional media, but increasingly takes place in fragmented and digital public spheres. At the same time, the modes of political engagement have changed: discourse is said to increasingly rely on strategies of emotionalization and to be deeply affective at its core. This book meticulously shows how public spheres are rooted in the emotional, bodily, and affective dimensions of language, and how language - in its capacity to affect and to be affected - produces those dynamics of affective resonance that characterize contemporary forms of political debate. Abstract
Although affect and emotion are often discussed in institutional and organizational research, they are rarely studied systematically and in accordance with their overall relevance. To investigate the decisive but subtle, sometimes barely noticeable or taken-for-granted power of institutions, we need to achieve a better understanding of the close intertwining of institutional rules, operations, and spaces with complex affective dynamics. In this article, we therefore develop an analytical framework that allows to investigate the countless affective dynamics that characterize institutions. First, this framework can help to come to terms with the multidimensionality of institutional affect and thus inform empirical studies of institutions. Second, our approach allows scholars and researchers to make visible those developments and modes of agency that run counter to the official functions and self-understandings of institutions. As a an initial step, we propose a conceptual clarification of "institution" and "organization" that incorporates various references to social theory which already foreshadow some dynamics of institutional affect. Further detailing this perspective, we develop an analytical grid that focuses, first, on what we call the "guiding affects" of institutions and, second, on the internal affective dynamics of institutions. The proposed framework provides a variety of links to discussions of institutions in cultural studies and the social sciences.

Recent research has investigated the emotional underpinnings of support for populist New Right parties and movements. Some of these works focus on the supply-side of New Right support, emphasizing specific political styles and discourses, whereas others emphasize the demand-side, highlighting cultural, economic, and emotional factors. Lacking from this research, in particular for the European context, is an understanding of how supporters of the New Right experience and make sense of pertinent cleavages with regards to emotions. The present study sets out to acquire a more detailed understanding of the emotional narratives and experiences of supporters of New Right parties and movements, in particular with regard to fear and religious cleavages. Using group interviews with supporters of New Right parties and movements in Germany, we show that narratives involving fear pertain to the idea of a valued collective "We" that consists of political and cultural elements and serves as a reference point to collective identity and an antidote to existential insecurities. Further, this collective "We" is perceived to be threatened by cultural differences and changing majority-minority relations with respect to five domains of social life: demography, the liberal democratic order, public majority culture, security, and welfare.

Recent years have witnessed substantial transformations of the public sphere that are driven by processes of transnationalization, migration, and digitalization and in turn significantly fuel social and political change. The public sphere continues to be the most important space where these processes and changes and their implications for social coexistence, belonging, and solidarity are debated and negotiated by various actors. Traditional views have portrayed the public sphere as a locus of language-based communicative rationality, deliberation, and the exchange of different views and arguments. The international conference Public Spheres of Resonance: Constellations of Affect and Language will question these normative conceptions and proposes to conceive of contemporary public spheres as often fragmented spaces of affective resonance that emerge from the power of language to affect and to ascribe and instill collective emotion. This is not a self-evident conjecture because most affect theories suggest to conceive of the social not primarily in terms of language, discourse and conceptual thought, but instead as an assemblage of bodies and their capacities to affect and be affected. Although this is a fruitful correction of existing bias towards overreliance on linguistic categories in the humanities and social sciences, it often oversteps the mark in its disregard for language. Language, in particular in a pragmatic sense and much like affect, is a genuinely relational category in its capacity to convey meaning. However, meaning is not restricted to propositions and denotations but critically involves connotative, associative, and bodily sources. The conference Public Spheres of Resonance: Constellations of Affect and Language therefore assumes that language not only conveys, represents, and attributes emotions, but also has the capacity to affect and to establish affective resonance, in both consonant and dissonant ways. Der Beitrag analysiert vorwiegend aus soziologischer Perspektive im Rahmen des interdisziplinären Handbuchs zur Gewalt die Rolle und den Zusammenhang von Emotionen und Gewalt. So facettenreich die Beschaffenheit menschlicher Gefühle und deren Ausdrucksformen auch ist, so lässt sich mit Blick auf die Anwendung von Gewalt doch ein vergleichsweise überschaubares Spektrum an Emotionen aufspüren, die in der einschlägigen Literatur als Auslöser von Gewalt hervorgehoben oder auch für die Initiierung von Gewaltspiralen verantwortlich gemacht werden, beispielsweise Angst, Ärger, Wut und Scham. Der Beitrag wirft einen Blick auf die emotionalen Antezedenzen und Konsequenzen von Gewalthandlungen und erläutert daran anschließend die soziale Konstitution von Emotionen und Gewalthandlungen. Vor dem abschließenden Ausblick wendet sich der Beitrag der Emotionsregulation und Gewaltvermeidung zu. (ICA2)

Die Verfasser beschäftigen sich mit den durch die Finanzkrise in den Medien-Fokus geratenen Finanzmärkten und ihren Akteuren. Sie fragen nach den Gefühlen der Händler auf dem Parkett: Was lösen Zahlenreihen auf Bildschirmen in ihnen aus? Die Antworten gewinnen sie aus Emotionsratgebern, deren Aussagen auf ein Paradox hinauslaufen: Einerseits sollen die Händler Emotionen weitestgehend ausschließen. Andererseits sind es die Emotionen, die große motivationale Kraft entfalten und sogar - Stichwort: Bauchgefühl - Schaden vom Geschäft abhalten können. Zudem beobachten sie eine Trennung zwischen individuell empfundenen Gefühlen und Stimmungen, die "dem Markt" zugeschrieben werden. (ICB2)

Die Verfasser analysieren in ihrem Beitrag makro- und mikrosoziale Determinanten des Entscheidungsverhaltens von Privatanlegern. Die Verfassern greifen zunächst die innerhalb des "Varieties of Capitalism"-Ansatzes getroffene Unterscheidung von bank- und marktbasierten Finanzsystemen auf, um den Einfluss unterschiedlicher institutioneller Rahmungen auf Anlageentscheidungen herauszuarbeiten. Am Beispiel der USA und Deutschlands nehmen die Verfasser differente Risikoneigungen zwischen Anlegern in bank- und marktbasierten Ökonomien zum Anlass, um nach einer Mikrofundierung des Anlageverhaltens zu fragen. Wie die Verfasser zeigen, ist die Wahrnehmung von Risiken und Chancen auf Finanzmärkten nicht allein Ausdruck von Strukturvariablen wie der Einkommensverteilung oder der institutionellen Verfasstheit der Altersvorsorgesysteme. Vielmehr müssen differente kulturelle Praktiken, habitualisierte Handlungsmuster und die während der Sozialisation internalisierten Verhaltensweisen im Umgang mit finanziellen Risiken in die Analyse einbezogen werden. Anlageentscheidungen werden so als komplexes Zusammenspiel von institutionellen Rahmungen auf der Makroebene und sozialen Normen bzw. habitualisierten historischen Erfahrungsmustern auf der Mikroebene sichtbar gemacht. Soziologische Theorien postulieren seit langem Zusammenhänge zwischen sozialer Ungleichheit und dem Empfinden von Emotionen. Der Vielfalt theoretischer Arbeiten steht jedoch ein Mangel an empirischen Studien gegenüber, insbesondere mit Blick auf die präzise Erfassung von Emotionen. Aus diesem Grund prüfen wir empirisch die Zusammenhänge zwischen Indikatoren sozialer Ungleichheit und der Häufigkeit des Erlebens von zwei grundlegenden und soziologisch besonders relevanten Emotionen, nämlich Angst und Ärger. Auf Grundlage von bevölkerungsrepräsentativen Daten des Sozio-oekonomischen Panel (SOEP) zeigen wir mittels multivariater Analyseverfahren, dass klassische Indikatoren sozialer Ungleichheit – beispielsweise beruflicher Status, Einkommen und Qualifikationsniveau – eigenständige Beiträge zur Erklärung der Häufigkeit des Empfindens von Angst und Ärger leisten. ; A number of sociological theories argue that the experience of emotion is associated with social inequality. Despite elaborate theoretical work, empirical studies are still rare and incoherent in their attempts at measuring emotion. As a consequence, we have, therefore, empirically investigated the relationship between social inequality and the experience of two of the sociologically most relevant emotions, namely anger and anxiety. Using representative data from the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (GSOEP), our multivariate analyses demonstrate that indicators of social inequality such as income, education, and occupational status, do, indeed, make a significant and independent contribution to explaining the experience of anger and anxiety.

We develop and test a multidimensional scale measuring national identification. Drawing on the extant literature on nations and national identity, we propose national identification as an understanding of how individuals subjectively and dynamically relate to different characteristics of nations that we operationalize as the dimensions of symbolic, civic, and solidary identification. We discuss the development of a number of questionnaire items representing each of these dimensions and report results of various validity and reliability tests using data from three surveys we conducted in England, Germany, and Poland. Results in general confirm the three-dimensional structure of the overall construct while at the same time suggesting country-specific adaptations to the scale.
