Authors from a variety of disciplines dealing with diverse historical cases engage with the spatial deployment of violence and the possibilities for memory and resistance in contexts of state sponsored violence, enforced disappearances and regimes of exception. The logic and temporality of the 'border spectacle' have dominated public reception of the violence endured by migrants and refugees on their journey to Europe, thus occluding the manifold ways in which daily, silent, slow violence unfolds through the EU border regime. The claim of this essay is that border assemblages are involved in the deployment of spatialized slow violence, especially through what I define as the political production of exposure to the elements. Scholars have shown how geographic and topographic factors are included in the strategies of border control and have become active factors in the policies of deterrence and 'neo-refoulement'. Building on this work, I elaborate on the mediated agency of the environmental or 'natural' forces in the production of border-related violence. This is a violence that expands in space beyond the location of the geographical state border and extends in time beyond the concrete instance of border crossing. Here, sovereign violence operates not only through an unconditional power of death but also through the abandonment and exposure of migrants to the elements and therefore the production of a zone of mere biological survival, while accountability chains are concealed. What in the Western view is understood as 'nature' can be produced, mobilized and instrumentalized as an active factor in the infrastructures of border enforcement, producing spatialized forms of slow violence. This operation does not imply, however, that the possibilities of agency and resistance are neglected. Rather, it points to the allegedly neutral dimension of 'nature' towards which border struggles are being displaced.

The high number of persons lost, missing, or dead without confirmation of decease in the Euro-Mediterranean in the context of migration and seek of asylum pose a challenge to the technical and conceptual tools available in order to account for their lives. This article explores the reach and possible uses of the category of enforced disappearance. The genealogy of enforced disappearance in Latin America in the 1970s is presented and discussed in terms of its legacies and teachings, like the importance of distinguishing disappearances from deaths. The recent incorporation of "disappearances in context of migration" as a matter of concern in explorative studies of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances is subsequently exposed and analyzed. Indirect, outsourced, or externalized state agency, creation of spaces of abandonment from the states, and emergence of spaces of indeterminacy between life and death are some of the aspects related to migratory routes to Europe tackled by the recommendations of the Working Group. Finally, the text explores the affinity between migrants' disappearances and other contemporary forms of exclusion or expulsion which may be subsumed under the category of "social disappearances."

Las tecnologías biométricas de control de fronteras están siendo crecientemente investigadas y empleadas por la Unión Europea. La combinación de información digitalizada proveniente de diversas fuentes corporales (iris, huellas dactilares, reconocimiento facial entre otras) así como de potenciales indicadores conductuales plantean una serie de preguntas en términos del derecho a la privacidad y la protección de la integridad individual. Más allá de estas cuestiones, sin embargo, la biometría plantea interrogantes complejos en relación al estatuto mismo del cuerpo y de lo humano. Las llamadas "anomalías de registro" en la captura de datos biométricos revelan una construcción del cuerpo humano "normal", mientras que otros son producidos como menos compatibles tecnológicamente. Esta construcción reproduce supuestos fuertemente asentados en el imaginario eurocéntrico, que construyen al otro no europeo como un ser cercano a la naturaleza. Al mismo tiempo, señala el ámbito al que se desplazan las disputas y desobediencias futuras, que es el del cuerpo mismo. ; The European Union is increasingly using and experimenting biometric technologies for border control. The combination of data proceeding from diverse bodily sources, like iris, fingerprints, and face recognition among others, as well as the potential integration of behavioral markers raise a series of questions concerning individual data protection and privacy rights. Beyond those issues, however, biometrics poses challenges regarding the very definition of the human and the body. The so called "failures to enroll" at capturing biometric data reveal a construction of the "normal" body, while other bodies appear as less technologically compatible. This construction is reproducing assumptions that are deeply engraved in the Eurocentric imaginary, where the non-European other is constructed as being closer to "nature". At the same time, it reveals the realm towards which contemporary border struggles and the possibility of contestation and resistance are being displaced, namely the very own body.

Ziel ist es, die Ausdrucksformen zu identifizieren, mit denen die Verschwundenen in einer Öffentlichkeit, die von der illegalen Repression durch die Militärdiktatur geprägt war, thematisiert wurden. Das gewaltsame "Verschwindenlassen" von Personen (Verschleppung, Folter und heimlicher Mord an Bürgern durch den Staat oder mit seiner Zustimmung) wurde von der argentinischen Diktatur (1976-1983) als Repressionsmethode angewendet. Der ungewisse Status der Verschwundenen, der durch das "Verschwindenlassen" entsteht, verhindert bis heute die kulturell üblichen Beerdigungsrituale. Dadurch wird eine undefinierte Kategorie zwischen Leben und Tod geschaffen, deren einschüchternde Auswirkungen sich auf die Gesellschaft in ihrer Gesamtheit übertragen. In dieser Arbeit werden das Verschwindenlassen von Personen wie auch die Diktatur, in der dies stattfand, weder als Ausnahme noch als absoluter Bruch mit der Geschichte und der argentinischen Gesellschaft verstanden, sondern als ein Produkt derselben, aus der es sich fortsetzt und mit der es Ähnlichkeiten aufweist. Der ausgewählte Untersuchungszeitraum erstreckt sich über drei Jahre, vom Juli 1975 bis Juni 1978. "Die Erinnerung an die Diktaturen der 1970er Jahre wird über einen Disput zwischen verschiedenen Akteuren und Diskursen gebildet, die um eine hegemoniale Version der Vergangenheit konkurrieren. Eines der Felder, auf denen dieser Disput ausgetragen wird, ist das der Errichtung von Gedenkstätten und der Umwidmung und Neuausdeutung von ehemaligen Haft- und Folterzentren und anderen Erinnerungsorten. Anhand repräsentativer Fälle aus Argentinien, Brasilien, Chile und Uruguay analysiert die Autorin die Präsenz der Erinnerung im urbanen Raum und stellt die Frage nach dem Bestehen einer spezifischen lateinamerikanischen Sprache der Erinnerung." This volume offers a variety of perspectives on the relation between violence, memory and space. Focusing on enforced disappearances and genocide as violent practices aimed at destroying and erasing the traces of the 'enemy', the contributions gathered inquire about the manifold spatial strategies of domination and violence, but also about the powers of memory, resistance and transformation. The originality and core contribution of this book lies in the dialogue it establishes between memory studies, on the one hand, and critical studies of space on the other. The bridging of these academic fields opens up a fertile and, to a large extent, unexplored research area. The volume brings together young academics and prominent international scholars from a variety of disciplinary fields, including Geography, Sociology, Political Science, Philosophy, Literature, Cultural Studies, Architecture and Theatre Studies. The authors engage with the spatial deployment of past and present violence in Argentina, Cambodia, Germany, Greece, Poland, Spain, Turkey and the United States. The chapters include original contributions by renowned authors Aleida Assmann and Jay Winter, transcripts of an interview with the eminent geographer David Harvey and fragments of the play The Cartographer. This working paper aims to reformulate the teleological concepts of Europeanization by relating them to modernity's ambivalences, which seems necessary for two reasons. First, both the number and the scope of crises in European politics and societies have increased considerably in the last two decades. Second, and more importantly, the project of European integration has changed its status from being a potential problem solver to being a part of the problem. The paper establishes a broader historical perspective than is usual in most projects on Europeanization. It argues that crises and drawbacks have been a part of European societal and political development during most periods of European history. One reason has been the purely European strategy of colonialism, which was used as a mechanism to outsource the negative consequences of modernity to places outside of Europe and to peripheral locations within Europe. By including historical and postcolonial perspectives on contemporary Europeanization, we argue that Europe and modernity are not characterized by teleological progress but rather engender ambivalent and entangled developments. ; Die Autor*innen verfolgen das Ziel, teleologische Konzepte der Europäisierung zu reformulieren, indem sie die Ambivalenz der Moderne als Bestandteil von Europäisierung berücksichtigen.
