Standardisation as a guarantee of commercial success? The English bulbs at the end of the Middle Ages ; La standardisation comme garant du succès commercial ? Les albâtres anglais de la fin du Moyen Âge
at the end of the Middle Ages, the Alabaster sculptors of the English Midlands produced large quantities of religious scenes. Although produced in multiple workshops, for some geographically distant from each other, these panels are characterised by their stereotypical appearance and the particular stylisation of the characters, which make them easily recognisable. Their uniform appearance is due to the standardisation of the dimensions of the panels, the exclusive use of high-relief as a method of representation, the invariance of the composition of the scenes, the widespread use of polychromia characterised by a restricted chromatic palette and the codified use of colours. Although the workshops have not brought significant innovations to their works for more than a century and a half, they have achieved great commercial success until the middle of the 16th century, both to a small customer base and to the elites, including the primers of the Italian Peninsula. ; International audience ; at the end of the Middle Ages, the Alabaster sculptors of the English Midlands produced large quantities of religious scenes.
