This article analyzes spatial hierarchies and geopolitical conflicts during the COVID-19 pandemic from a world-systems perspective. Drawing on data on global vaccine production and distribution, we argue that the trimodal structure of the capitalist world-system—core, semi-periphery, and periphery—has been reproduced through unequal access to vaccines, constituting hierarchically structured "vaccine worlds". These vaccine worlds are geopolitically contested, as Chinese companies compete with American and European corporations for influence and markets. Against this background, we outline the Chinese state-led vaccine internationalization strategy with its focus on the global South, and discuss its achievements and contradictions.

Der Beitrag analysiert räumliche Hierarchien und geopolitische Konfliktdynamiken bei der Bekämpfung der COVID-19-Pandemie aus der Perspektive des Weltsystemansatzes. Datensätze zeigen, dass sich das Modell aus Zentrum, Semiperipherie und Peripherie bei der Impfstoffverteilung und -produktion reproduziert. Die asymmetrische Verteilung von Ressourcen zur Bekämpfung der COVID-19-Krise übersetzt sich in hierarchisch strukturierte Impfstoffwelten, die sich zu Schauplätzen geopolitischer Konflikte um Impfstoffproduktion und -distribution entwickelt haben, auf denen insbesondere amerikanische, europäische und chinesische Herstellerfirmen um Einflusssphären und Absatzmärkte konkurrieren.

ABSTRACTOver the course of the last decade, China has experienced growing labour unrest in many economic sectors including electronics, textiles and services. One reason for this is that the All‐China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) is not engaged at the shop floor level; it does not represent workers and has failed to organize strikes. Instead, labour non‐governmental organizations (NGOs) have stepped in to fill the representation gap and to support striking workers. This article analyses the networks between labour NGOs, other civil society actors such as student activists, and protesting workers in China's Pearl River Delta. The authors show that a new informal network of activists and transnational linkages has emerged in Guangdong Province. They argue that civil society organizations can play a crucial role in supporting workers' demands in strike actions, presenting a case of successful coalition building in the service sector during a strike by sanitation workers in the University Town Campus of Sun Yat‐sen University in Guangzhou. Drawing on a power resource approach and in‐depth field research, the authors conclude that the engagement of labour NGOs and other civil society actors in strike actions has the potential to shape labour relations at the level of the firm. However, due to growing state repression, there are limits for emerging civil society actions.

The article analyzes the recent wave of labor unrest in Western Europe after the 2008 financial and economic crisis. It draws theoretically on the global capitalism school and a labor power resource approach, and empirically on a database on social conflict (JenaConDa). Unlike the last cycle of contention between 1968 and 1973, the post-2008 conflicts have changed in two respects: First, the uneven and combined development of European integration has led to a spatially uneven distribution of workers' protests. Second, in the current wave of conflict, new forms of non-institutionalized conflicts have emerged.

In den vergangenen Jahren hat sich in der Gewerkschaftsforschung ein Paradigmenwechsel vollzogen. Herrschte lange Zeit ein Krisendiskurs über den gewerkschaftlichen Niedergang, betonen heute die Labor Revitalization Studies die Strategiefähigkeit von Gewerkschaften und untersuchen deren Erneuerung. Die Reorientierung schlägt sich auch in der Theoriediskussion nieder. So wird nunmehr in erster Linie nach den Machtmitteln von Beschäftigten und kollektiven Interessenvertretungen gefragt, um veränderten institutionellen und ökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen zu entgegnen. Dieser theoretisch orientierte Beitrag zum Machtressourcenansatz ordnet sich in die Debatte ein. Es wird am deutschen Beispiel gezeigt, dass Beschäftigte über Lohnabhängigenmacht verfügen, mit der sie ihre Interessen durch kollektive Mobilisierungen von Machtressourcen durchsetzen können. In dem Artikel wird das Comeback der deutschen Gewerkschaften seit der Krise 2008/09 anhand von vier zentralen Machtressourcen und verschiedenen Fähigkeiten untersucht. Wir kommen zum Schluss, dass die gewerkschaftliche Machtbasis sich konsolidiert hat, aber dass weiterhin Herausforderungen für deren dauerhafte Stabilisierung, etwa die Erosion des Flächentarifvertragssystems, bestehen. ; In the last decade, trade union research has undergone a paradigm shift. For a long time a discourse of crisis dominated the field. Today, Labor Revitalization Studies emphasize strategic choices of trade unions and analyze their renewal. The shift in focus is also reflected in theory. Today, research is mainly concerned with power resources of workers and unions who confront changing institutional and economic conditions. This paper seeks to contribute to this debate. Analyzing the case of Germany, it is argued that workers are able to mobilize labor power to promote their interests. We discuss the recent comeback of German trade unions after the global economic crisis in 2008/09 using a concept of four power resources and several union capabilities. The results show that even though trade union's power basis has consolidated, several challenges remain such as the erosion of the collective bargaining system.

Vertreten sind Mitglieder des Arbeitskreises, aber auch Wissenschaftler aus anderen nationalen wie internationalen Zusammenhängen, die mit eigenen Beiträgen in die Debatte intervenieren. Alle versammelten Texte beziehen sich, sei es direkt oder eher implizit, auf Kategorien, die im Zentrum der von Brinkmann u.a. (ebd.) formulierten Forschungsheuristik stehen. Nachfolgend erläutern wir (1) noch einmal die Grundidee des 'Jenaer Machtressourcenansatzes', stellen sodann die flankierenden Konzepte 'marktgetriebene Landnahme' (2) und 'Erneuerung als transnationales Lernen' (3) vor und beschäftigen uns abschließend (4) mit neuen Herausforderungen und Fragen, deren Beantwortung ohne analytischen Blick auf subjektive Orientierungen von Lohnabhängigen schwer möglich ist."
