Marshall McLuhan understood television (TV) as a tactile medium. This understanding implied what Bruno Latour might call a 'symmetrical' conception of tactility. According to McLuhan, not only human actors are endowed with the sense of touch. In addition, TV, digital computers and other 'electric media' use light beams and similar scanning techniques for ceaselessly 'caressing the contours' of their surroundings. This notion of tactility was crucially shaped by the holistic aesthetics of the early Bauhaus. To get at the specific features of the TV image, McLuhan relied on the writings of László Moholy-Nagy and Sigfried Giedion, in particular their use of photography for capturing and highlighting the 'texture' of surfaces. However, he hardly reflected the social and political factors that, in the age of electric media, contribute to the 'symmetricization' of touch.

Gilbert Simondons Abhandlung Du mode d'existence des objets techniques (1958) operiert im Übergangsraum zwischen Heideggers Technikphilosophie und zeitgenössischer Kybernetik. Darüber hinaus skizziert Simondon ein explizit politisches Programm, das in der Forderung kulminiert, die technischen Objekte durch menschliche Repräsentanten in der Kultur der heutigen Gesellschaft besser zur Geltung zu bringen. 1952 veröffentlicht der Philosoph und Wissenschaftshistoriker Georges Canguilhem die Aufsatzsammlung La connaissance de la vie. 1968 erscheint in seinen Etudes d′histoire et de philosophie des sciences ein Abschnitt mit dem Titel „La nouvelle connaissance de la vie“. Er enthält nur einen einzigen Beitrag, den grundlegenden Aufsatz „Le concept et la vie“. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt das Attribut „nouvelle“ zum Anlaß, die auf Abstammungslinien von Begriffen ausgerichtete Wissenschaftsgeschichte von Canguilhem auf ihre Entwicklung in den Jahren zwischen 1950 und 1965 zu befragen. Es wird die These formuliert, dass Canguilhem in den sechziger Jahren, angesichts neuerer Entwicklungen in den Lebenswissenschaften (u.a. die Entdeckung der DNA-Struktur) und trotz einer durchgehend von Nietzsche inspirierten Sichtweise des Verhältnisses von Leben und Erkenntnis, eine Revision früherer Positionen vorgenommen hat: Während er das Erkenntnisproblem in den fünfziger Jahren vor allem auf eine Individualität des Verhaltens und Erlebens innerhalb einer bestimmten Umwelt bezieht und „erkennen“ gleichsetzt mit „analysieren, vermessen und berechnen“, verbindet er es in späteren Jahren mit einer Kollektivität der Vererbung, der Transmission, Transkription und Expression von genetischer Information. Folgerichtig wird „erkennen“ nunmehr definiert als „sich informieren, sich üben im Entziffern und Dekodieren“.

In the meantime he is regarded not just as one of the most intelligent—and also popular—exponents of science studies but also as a major innovator of the social sciences, an exemplary wanderer who walks the line between the sciences and the humanities.This book provides the first comprehensive overview of the Latourian oeuvre, from his early anthropological studies in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), to influential books like Laboratory Life and Science in Action, and his most recent reflections on an empirical metaphysics of "modes of existence." In the course of this enquiry it becomes clear that the basic problem to which Latour's work responds is that of social tradition, the transmission of experience and knowledge. Following Hannah Arendt's insights into the affinities between Marxism and the philosophy of life, this article reconstructs a theoretical position that we propose to call 'vitalist Marxism'. This position conceives of life not only as an essential foundation of the production process, but also as a critical resource for resistance to the capitalist logic of exploitation. We highlight the role Georges Canguilhem (1904–95) played in developing this position, in particular by depicting tools and machines as 'organs of life'. Drawing on Canguilhem's early writings as well as unpublished manuscripts, we show that this 'organological' understanding of technology was rooted in the increasingly anti-fascist reception of Marx in France during the 1930s. Against the background of today's protests against climate destruction, racism, and anti-feminist violence, all of which invoke the defense of basic living conditions, we argue that the critical position of vitalist Marxism acquires remarkable topicality.

Engaging with the specific ways current media technologies interact with, or directly access the human body, we suggest developing a 'symmetrical' theory of touch. Critically referring to Bruno Latour's invocation of 'symmetrical anthropology', we reconsider tactile agency as 'technological agency', arguing that the concept of touch – traditionally viewed as an exclusively human ability – should be extended to non-human actors and analysed in view of the cultural logic of capitalism. Its systematic focus, then, is on the productive intersections and contact zones between biology and technology: from phenomena of non-human touch in industrial production (lathing, printing, etc.) to the material touching taking place in the instrumental grasp on the living in the 19th-century physiological laboratories and the invisible operations of tracing, tracking and sensing taking place in the technological milieus of today's (media) environments. In highlighting the tactile dimension of digital modernity and its economic genealogies, this article aims to advance a combined concept of human and non-human touch which provides a crucial angle for reconsidering bodies and technologies in the age of ubiquitous computing.
