The use of audiovisual recording devices is changing the practice of qualitative research. Extensive corpus of data can be generated in (shortterm) focussed fieldwork. Nevertheless, methods to analyse video data are still in an experimental stage. This article explores the benefits and limitations of applying sociolinguistic genre analysis to audio-visual data. This is illustrated with a case study, based on the videotaped »deep-trance vision« of a New Religious Movement's spiritual leader, which is one the most famous contemporary religious visionaries in Germany. The analysis aims to reconstruct the construction of this religious experience of transcendence from the perspective of its followers. We will examine three different levels of communication (a) the inner context, exploring the textual, gestural, mimical and prosodic aspects, (b) the intermediate level where the focus lies on the setting and decorum, and finally (c) the outer context, focussing on the social embedding of this form of »transcendent« communication and its filmic presentation. The article closes with a reflection on the need to combine hermeneutic analysis of case studies based on textual analysis with ethnographic field data and observation to contextualise its interpretation.

Artykuł ten porusza problematykę wyłaniającej się socjologii wiedzy wizualnej, powracając do debaty na temat "rewolucji obrazów" (revolution of images) we współczesnej kulturze. Autor rozważa rolę wizualizacji dla współczesnych form wytwarzania i dystrybucji wiedzy, a następnie wskazuje główne zadania, jakie stoją przed wizualnymi badaniami społecznymi. Artykuł kończy próba doprecyzowania różnych konotacji pojęcia wiedzy wizualnej.

Dass sich die Wissenssoziologie mit der Hermeneutik verbunden hat zählt zu den Besonderheiten der deutschen Soziologie. Die "hermeneutische Wissenssoziologie" steht in der Tradition einer deutlich mitteleuropäisch geprägten, geisteswissenschaftlich fundierten und zugleich empirisch arbeitenden Sozialwissenschaft. WEBER ist der bedeutsame Ausgangspunkt dieser Theorierichtung, die von SCHÜTZ ihre mundanphänomenologische Fundierung und von BERGER und LUCKMANN ihre wissenssoziologische Konturierung erhielt. Ziel einer so verstandenen Soziologie ist die Rekonstruktion "Gesellschaftlicher Konstruktionen der Wirklichkeit". Ihre Vertreter teilen die Auffassung, dass es einer der empirischen Forschung entkoppelten – "reinen" – sozialwissenschaftlichen Theorieproduktion an epistemologischer Begründungsfähigkeit ermangelt. Bestrebungen zu einer ahistorischen, allgemeinen Gesellschaftstheorie begegnen sie deshalb mit Skepsis. Umso dringender sind die Bemühungen zur Fortsetzung einer Reflexion der epistemologischen Grundlagen und die Fortentwicklung methodologischer Begründungen sowie methodischer Verfahren, die in dem hier besprochenen Band vorgelegt werden. Eine "hermeneutische Wissenssoziologie" lässt sich, so betonen die Herausgeber, begreifen als methodisch eingesetzte Skepsis gegenüber "positivem Wissen". Sie nimmt sich die "Entzauberung gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen" vor, was die betonte Selbstkritik an den eigenen "Konstrukten der Soziologen" mit einschließt. Als äußerst zeitgemäß erweist sich das von den Vertretern der hermeneutischen Wissenssoziologie konsequent praktizierte, kollaborativ verfahrende (nicht kollektivistisch verengte!) Wissenschaftsverständnis und die entsprechende Wissenschaftspraxis. In ihrer inneren Pluralität, ihrem Interesse und ihrer Kooperationsbereitschaft gegenüber anderen Theorietraditionen sowie insbesondere in der Fähigkeit, auch die Beweggründe, die gesellschaftlichen Nonsens motivieren, aufzudecken, liegen die wesentlichen Vorteile gegenüber anderen, hermetischeren Formen sozialwissenschaftlicher Analyse.

Documentation of the 2010 Midterm Conference of the European Sociological Association Research Network 20 Qualitative Methods "Innovating Qualitative Research: Challenges and Opportunities. New Directions in Religion, Technology, Migration and Beyond," held at the University of Bayreuth (Germany), 20-22 September 2010. The following documentation includes the inaugural addresses and all statements and interventions from the two plenary sessions on "The Future of Qualitative Research" that took place during the mid-term conference in September 2010 at the University of Bayreuth. Speeches and discussions were entirely videotaped, transcribed and carefully edited in order to present a thorough and readable documentation. The text was revised by all intervening speakers and is published upon unanimous approval. We are grateful to Carolin Dix for valuable support with transcribing the video data.

Visual research methods are becoming increasingly important for qualitative studies. Within this dynamically expanding field, methods for analysing 'natural' video recordings have developed considerably over the past decades. In this article we discuss methodological aspects of general importance for any analysis of this type of video data. Being a fundamentally interpretive method, our first argument is that sequential analysis is always a hermeneutic endeavour, which requires methodical understanding. The second refers to data collection. We stress that, in addition to sequential analysis, the ethnographic dimension of video analysis should be taken into account methodologically. Video analysis requires, thirdly, a systematic account of the subjectivity, both of the actors analysed as well as of the analysts. Our arguments are grounded in extensive data from several studies, including the communicative genre of powerpoint presentations, commemoration rituals and public events. Selected data fragments are presented here to support our claims. Building upon this expertise, we propose further improvement of video analysis methodology by reflecting on our own practice of analysing video in data sessions (i.e. the 'video analysis of video analysis').

'The article offers a brief resume of recent developments in the field of interpretative visual analysis with emphasis on the German speaking area and the sociological discipline. It lays a special focus on hermeneutical and genre analysis and on research with audiovisual data. Far from constituting an already closed field, the authors stress the fact that methodological advances in qualitative research based in visual data still face a number of pending quests. This encompasses sequentiality, complexity and naturalness of video-graphic data, and extends to the respective methodological challenges for transcription, analysis and presentation of results.'
