In 2014, I administered a large-scale, international survey to migrant- and refugee-focused nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in every country of the European Union in order to study how these NGOs engage in political influence, both domestically and supranationally. In this case study, I present an account of how the survey questionnaire was designed to measure political activity. I discuss the concept of construct validity and recount how key theoretical constructs were translated into questionnaire items and subsequently assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. In addition, I discuss the key lessons learned and offer practical recommendations based on this research study.

As part of a multiyear research project, a colleague and I used content analysis to investigate the advocacy discourse surrounding refugee protection in the context of Europe's refugee crisis, exploring how civil society organizations deliberately draw upon norms to reframe and "repackage" the issue. In this case study, I present an account of how we conducted this extensive content analysis to identify the presence of, and analyze, specific norms. I discuss the various considerations involved in constructing a sample of organizations and selecting the type of information to analyze and offer practical recommendations for how to identify norms and norm-based strategies in advocacy work based on this research study. I also consider lessons that we learned from this experience to provide guidance to researchers who are interested in studying how advocates use norms. Although undertaking a content analysis of this type can be a time-intensive and complex endeavor, it is a practical method for understanding how advocacy groups leverage the power of norms to shift public opinion and ultimately bring about policy change.

The Survey of Migrant Inclusion NGOs was administered across every country of the European Union in 2014 to assess how the national policy context specific to migrant? issues influences both domestic and transnational cooperation among migrant inclusion organizations. In this case study, I present an account of how the sampling frame was constructed for this large-scale, international survey. I discuss the various considerations involved in constructing a sampling frame for an organizational survey, and offer practical recommendations based on this research study. Although constructing the sampling frame for an organizational survey can be a time-intensive and complex endeavor, a good sampling frame is necessary to reduce sampling bias and ensure representation.

European umbrella organisations that promote migrant and refugee rights seek to influence EU policy-making in the context of Europe's 'migration and refugee crisis'. From a functional representation perspective, their legitimacy rests on being representative of large constituencies that actively participate in their work. Yet past research on national migrant rights organisations underscores that, due to their diversity, priorities within the movement are not uniform. Different scholars come to different conclusions regarding the cleavages that define the movement. Moreover, it remains unclear how these cleavages impact participation in European umbrella organisations. This paper investigates these questions by empirically examining the cleavages among the membership base of two EU umbrella organisations: the European Council on Refugees and Exiles and the European Network Against Racism. Data come from a content analysis of member organisations' websites and interviews with directors of European umbrella organisations. Factor analysis techniques are used to assess empirically the different dimensions that structure diversity, examining several fault lines: identity/ideology, target population and worldview. The results point to cleavages that can differentially affect participation in the umbrella and present strategies used by leaders of umbrella organisations to encourage more active participation by certain types of under-represented member organisations.
Advocating for Refugees in the European Union draws on different strands of theory in political science to examine how civil society groups use norm-based advocacy strategies to change the nature of the public and political debate surrounding refugee and asylum policy in five European countries and at the EU level.
