Told from the perspective of a participant in Austria's civil war of February 1934, Reinhard Federmann's novel examines political developments in Austria from 1934 to 1956. In addition to chronicling his own disappointment with Soviet-style communism, the narrator criticizes the postwar consensus politics of the two major political parties for their failure to acknowledge the disastrous consequences of the totalitarian corporate state's dismantling of democratic structures and resistance to fascism. The narrator does not offer a political or ideological analysis but unsparingly scrutinizes his own actions, underscoring the novel's emphasis on individual political accountability.
