"Ehen zwischen Migranten und Personen der Aufnahmegesellschaft gelten als 'harter'
Indikator sozialer Integration (u.a. Gordon 1964), da sie Auskunft über die soziale Distanz
zwischen Mitgliedern verschiedener sozialer Gruppen in dem wohl wichtigsten Bereich
sozialer Beziehungen geben. Zugleich stellen sie eine Art Beschleuniger der Integration in
vielen anderen Lebensbereichen dar, da durch den Partner verstärkt herkunftsspezifische
Kapitalien (z.B. Sprachkenntnisse) erworben werden, die sich beispielsweise auf dem
Arbeitsmarkt verwerten lassen (z.B. Lieberson/Waters 1988: 162 f). Bestehen zahlreiche
binationale oder interethnische Ehen verliert zudem die Nationalität oder Ethnie als soziale
Kategorie an Bedeutung. Von sogenannten transnationalen Ehen, also Ehen die – über
die Grenze des Aufenthaltslandes – mit Partnern aus den jeweiligen Herkunftsländern der
Migranten geschlossen werden, wird dagegen ein hemmender Einfluss auf den Integrationsprozess
einer Migrantengruppe angenommen. Einerseits werden transnationale Ehen mit auf das Herkunftsland bezogenen Orientierungen und Einstellungen der ansässigen Migranten in Zusammenhang gebracht. Andererseits gründet die Annahme darauf, dass die auf diesem Weg zuziehenden Migranten in der Regel kaum über im Aufnahmeland verwertbare Kapitalien verfügen. Dieses kann infolge die individuelle Eingliederung erschweren, wirkt sich aber insbesondere auch hemmend auf den Integrationsprozess der nachfolgenden Generation aus. Anhand von Daten des Mikrozensus wird gezeigt, wie sich transnationale Ehen über die Jahre, die Heiratskohorten und die Generationen in Westdeutschland entwickelt haben. Dabei ist festzustellen, dass insgesamt immer weniger Migranten in einer transnationalen Ehe leben. Über die Gruppen zeigen sich
aber beträchtliche Unterschiede. Dies gilt auch für die binationalen Ehen, wobei hier im
Großen und Ganzen eine Zunahme über die Zeit und die Generationen zu beobachten ist." (Autorenreferat)

This paper analyses the age and educational homogamy of same-sex couples in Germany over a 20-year period from 1996 to 2015. Data of the Microcensus show that cohabiting same-sex couples are less likely to be homogamous than cohabiting different-sex couples, both in terms of age and education. For same-sex couples, gender matters, male same-sex couples being the most diverse. The analyses thus confirm previous results for other European countries. Hitherto, changes in the homogamy of same-sex couples over time had not been studied in Europe, mainly due to data constraints. However, major changes in the visibility and legal acceptance of same-sex couples suggest that their patterns of partner choice are becoming more similar to those of different-sex couples. Our analyses show that the age difference among female same-sex couples has indeed narrowed over time, converging with the age difference among different-sex couples. For male same-sex couples though, there is no clear trend. In terms of educational homogamy, contrary to our assumption, we find a clear decline among same-sex couples of both genders since the 2000s, making them even more dissimilar to different-sex couples.

"In diesem Beitrag verwenden wir Daten der amtlichen Statistik, um transnationale Ehen bei Immigranten in Deutschland zu analysieren. Die Zusammenführung aller verfügbaren Scientific Use Files des deutschen Mikrozensus zwischen 1976 und 2004 liefert empirische Befunde, die in ihrer Breite und in der Tiefe ihrer Differenzierung bislang einzigartig sind. Wir betrachten die fünf am weitesten verbreiteten Gruppen ehemaliger Arbeitsmigranten und untersuchen gruppenspezifische Trends über die Generationen und über die Zeit. Unsere empirische Analyse wird von vier Grundannahmen geleitet, die in einem allgemeineren theoretischen Rahmen des Heiratsverhaltens von Migranten verankert sind. Wie erwartet finden wir hinsichtlich der Neigung, eine(n) Partner(in) aus dem jeweils eigenen Herkunftsland zu wählen, große Unterschiede zwischen den Gruppen. Die vermuteten Effekte der Opportunitätsstruktur werden jedoch nur für die Frauen bestätigt. Zentrale Schlussfolgerungen aus einer allgemein assimilationistischen Sichtweise zeigen sich ebenfalls nur teilweise: Zu den erstaunlichsten Ergebnissen unserer Studie gehören die allgemeine Zunahme transnationaler Ehen von Frauen aus dem ehemaligen Jugoslawien und der Türkei sowie die Abwesenheit von Effekten der strukturellen Assimilation auf die Neigung zur transnationalen Ehe." AbstractPrevious literature on European identification has often taken for granted what respondents understand by this term. The present article addresses this issue, and on the basis of a recent study in Switzerland seeks to identify the meanings that individuals associate with the concept of Europe. Furthermore, it examines how these meanings relate to their identification with Europe. It also explores the potential covariates of these various conceptions of Europe – particularly transnational experiences and networks. Our analyses identify six dimensions of the meaning of Europe, each of which is differently related to identification with Europe. Although EU citizens and non‐EU citizens in different types of (bi‐national) relationships assigned similar meanings to Europe overall, they differed with respect to the importance they accorded each of these meanings. Individuals who tend to benefit from the EU, i.e. EU citizens and persons with a higher level of education, attribute more positive meanings to Europe.

In our paper, we study the factors shaping the formation of four different types of marriage in Switzerland: marriages with a Swiss partner, marriages with partners from the neighboring countries which are geographically proximate and where one of the official languages of Switzerland is spoken, marriages with partners from other European countries and with partners from overseas. Going beyond the current state of research, we study not only the national structural characteristics of the Swiss partner market and the individual resources of the spouses, but the actual meeting places of the partners and their reasons for being in these locations. Thus, we analyze whether, in a globalizing world and partner market, it is still primarily national opportunity structures that shape different forms of intermarriage. Using a mixed-methods approach we first show, based on census data, that the probability of these marriages is shaped by the structural opportunities of the partner market in Switzerland and individual characteristics like age and education. Second, relying on survey information, we demonstrate that bi-national relationships exhibit a specific pattern of meeting places: in particular, those couples with one partner from a non-neighboring or non-European country often meet abroad and in more open foci of activity. This has not previously been demonstrated empirically in the research literature and clearly shows that the factors shaping these marriages are not covered by a theoretical model focusing on the structural opportunities of national societies. Finally, we scrutinize narrative interviews and show that meeting a spouse abroad is the result of both specific partner preferences and patterns of spatial mobility. Thus, global opportunity structures are to a certain degree shaped by individual agency.

We analyze the impact of intermarriage, and transnational social relations and experiences on the emergence of European identity. According to the structuralist theory of identification, European social relations, with European intermarriage as an especially important relation, and experiences should explain European identifications. Our analysis is based on a survey in Zurich, Switzerland, providing a broad array of data that allow testing the impact of a European partner on European identification for Swiss and how transnational social relations and experiences contribute to both Swiss and non-Swiss feeling European. Overall, we find that a partner from another European country (for Swiss natives) and transnational social relations and experiences have an important role in explaining European identification. The most important differences are between Swiss and EU citizens living in Switzerland where, for the latter, the meaning of Europe is differently constructed. Specifically, EU citizens see less conflict between national and European identification.
