My dissertation, Blurring the Boundaries of Struggle: Relational Resistance and Seattle's Third World Left, challenges an ongoing tendency of social movement historians to interpret the racial politics of the late 1960s in narrow terms. While few scholars still entertain Todd Gitlin's notion that the rise of Black Power and other "identity movements" resulted in the "declension" of 1960s social movements, contemporary civil rights histories still portray this period as a time of interracial strife. Yet, opposed to past studies that focus on black and white disunity, more recent studies emphasize examples of racial discord between communities of color. Once again, the emphasis placed on conflict obscures a more significant historical development. In the backdrop of the radicalization of domestic anti-racist movements and decolonization movements abroad, activists of color articulated a common political identity as "Third World people," which expressed a shared relationship with racism, capitalism, and colonialism. To capture the new political and social relationships that developed between self-proclaimed "Third World leftists," my dissertation advances the concept of relational resistance: a process by which communities with different experiences of racial oppression begun defining their liberation in relation to and in solidarity with one another.To explore this concept, I focus on Seattle's movement culture in the 1970s and 1980s, a distinctly multiracial "contact zone" of people, ideas, and social movements. A unique brand of working-class solidarity emerged out of this political milieu that revealed the multiracial contours of Seattle's Black Power Movement. Black workers in the United Construction Workers Association (UCWA) and their allies throughout the Pacific Northwest rallied around the concept of "No Separate Peace." Through an analysis of archival documents and interviews of over twenty movement participants, I have organized my dissertation into two parts to analyze the multiple ways No Separate Peace functioned as a form of relational resistance. In part one, I explore key events and critical moments where the struggles of Black and other aggrieved racial groups converged and cross-fertilized. Part two then shifts into an examination of the discourse that surrounded relational resistance. Specifically, I interpret No Separate Peace, and other concepts developed by UCWA activists as "languages of solidarity" that conceptually linked the experiences of distinct groups. In sum, my research sheds light on the expansive world of solidarity that emerged from movements that are too narrowly defined as simply "identity politics."

Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte des deutschen Juristen Helmut Schneider (1910-1968). Der NS-Gegner wird leitender Mitarbeiter im Personalbereich der IG Farben, die 1941-1945 in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zum KZ Auschwitz mit Hilfe von Tausenden jüdischer Häftlinge und Zwangsarbeitern ein großes Chemiewerk aufbaute. Er ist in dieser Funktion ein indirekter Mitorganisator des Systems der Zwangsarbeit von KZ-Häftlingen und damit der "Vernichtung durch Arbeit" in diesem Lager. Zugleich wird er zum Beschützer einer großen Gruppe französischer Zwangsarbeiter, deren Aktivitäten für die Résistance er unterstützt und die er im Januar 1945 auf dem gefährlichen Marsch nach Westen begleitet. Das trägt ihm in Frankreich den Titel des "anti-nazi assesseur Schneider" ein. Mit den jungen Franzosen schließt er eine lebenslange Freundschaft, die u. a. zu einer deutsch-französischen Städtepartnerschaft führt. Nach seiner Zeugenaussage im Nürnberger Prozess gegen die IG Farben, einem langwierigen Entnazifizierungsverfahren und einem Strafprozess wird er 1949 Oberstadtdirektor von Goslar, Verfasser politisch-philosophischer Texte und Briefpartner und Freund von Ernst Jünger. Schneiders Biografie zeigt exemplarisch, wie sich in einem durch den Nationalsozialismus belasteten Leben Opposition, Mittäterschaft und Verdrängung miteinander verknüpften.

Vituperation, disparagement, and debasement seem to have become part of the mainstream discourse in contemporary US-American media culture. Zooming in on a distinct televisual comedy genre, Katja Schulze explores the formal principles, media-specific realizations, and the cultural work of disparagement in contemporary female-led situation comedies. Subsequently, larger patterns of (gender-based) invective strategies and conventions that define the dynamism of this comedic genre come into view. Her study outlines case studies of popular sitcoms, like Parks and Recreation, Mike & Molly, and the revival of hit-sitcom Roseanne, thereby unearthing how the shows are able to stage humor as mass-mediated deprecation - a signifying practice with its own poetics and politics.

Rechtsextremismus ist eine politische Ideologie, die auf völkischem Nationalismus und Vorstellungen von Ungleichwertigkeit basiert. Damit gefährdet er das gleichberechtigte und friedliche Zusammenleben in einer pluralen Gesellschaft. Auch wenn Rechtsextremisten nach 1945 in Deutschland nie Mehrheiten gewinnen konnten, blicken sie hierzulande auf eine lange Geschichte mit verschiedenen Organisationsformen und Handlungsstrategien zurück. Der Rechtsextremismusforscher Christoph Schulze zeigt auf, worin die Kernelemente rechtsextremer Ideologie bestehen, und beleuchtet die vielfältigen Akteure, die sich diesem politischen Lager zurechnen lassen: ein weit verzweigtes Netzwerk aus Parteien, Organisationen, Publikationsorganen, informellen Zusammenschlüssen und Subkulturen. Schulze nimmt ihre historische Entwicklung wie aktuelle Trends in den Blick. Er fokussiert unter anderem auf die Gewaltgeschichte des Rechtsextremismus in der Bundesrepublik, auf rechtsextreme Einflüsse in staatlichen Sicherheitsorganen und auf neuere Entwicklungen eines fluiden Rechtsextremismus, der vor allem in Online-Communitys einen wirkmächtigen Resonanzraum findet.
