Digital Humanities is a transformational endeavor that not only changes the perception, storage, and interpretation of information but also of research processes and questions. It also prompts new ways of interdisciplinary communication between humanities scholars and computer scientists. This volume offers a unique perspective on digital methods for and in the humanities. It comprises case studies from various fields to illustrate the challenge of matching existing textual research practices and digital tools. Problems and solutions with and for training tools as well as the adjustment of research practices are presented and discussed with an interdisciplinary focus.

Die Verwendung des lateinischen Wortes »virtus« ist in den Schriften des Mittelalters nahezu omnipräsent. Gleichzeitig ist das Konzept, das mit dieser Vokabel verbunden wird, mehrdeutig und schillernd. Was uns heute als »Tugend« verständlich erscheint, hat eine semantische Karriere hinter sich, die sich zwischen so unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen wie »göttliche Macht«, »politische Eignung« oder »asketisch-christliches Ideal« bewegt. Die Gleichzeitigkeit all dieser Bedeutungsaspekte, ihre Selektion und zeitweise Stabilisierung ist das Thema dieser Untersuchung. Das Ergebnis ist eine detaillierte Beschreibung der Situationen und Prozesse, in denen »virtus« eine politische Bedeutung hat.

In the past few years a multidisciplinary team of scholars based at Goethe Universität Frankfurt has been involved in the development of three projects: the research project "Political language in the Middle Ages: Semantic Approaches", and two online platforms, "Computational Historical Semantics" and "eHumanities Desktop". These are closely related to each other, as they bring together historical research on Latin medieval texts and Digital Humanities. This article will offer an overview of the projects, focusing particularly on the digital tools which have been developed by the team.

Comparisons affect various ways of perceiving and interpreting the world, characterized by distinct legitimization strategies and knowledge application routines by different actors. The contributors to this volume explore the link between change and practices of comparing, focusing on order, representation, and models. They delve into how comparing influences knowledge production, but also focus on persisting orders of knowledge. This collection centers on the role of models and modeling in relation to practices of comparing, thus highlighting the representational and operational force of comparing as a way to form and organize reality.

Plausibilisierung und Evidenz sind nicht nur für den akademischen Diskurs unverzichtbar, sondern spielen auch im Alltag eine große Rolle. Die Beiträger*innen nehmen Plausibilisierungs- und Evidenzpraktiken als dynamische Prozesse in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen in den Blick. Dabei beleuchten sie, wie diese Prozesse ausgelöst werden und warum sie so erfolgreich sind. Der sowohl historische wie auch systematische Zugang adressiert die Thematik in interdisziplinärer Spannweite und verspricht vielfältige Anknüpfungspunkte, die inner- und außerhalb der Wissenschaft relevant sind.
