A critical analysis of the role of the governmental power elite in the deliberate use of scientific research & development for promoting militaristic policies & the nuclear arms race. Attitudes toward the Strategic Defense Initiative found among the community of scientists & engineers are summarized, highlighting the impact of large amounts of funding in both academic & applied contexts on scientists' rationales for avoiding responsibility for the social implications of their work. An experimental solution to militaristic policies is proposed: a plan of action urging creation & development of new & potent public opposition, holding political leadership accountable for their responses. Physicists, in particular, since they are so central to the present predicament, should collectively withdraw their services from weapons work & commit themselves in favor of life on this planet. It is concluded that scientists united against nuclear & arms development have a profound impact on US government militarism. 7 References. M. Crowdes
