Although almost all of Europe was under royal rule for most of the nineteenth and much of the twentieth century, very little effort has so far been dedicated to explaining this phenomenon. By examining royal photographs the author is able to shed light on some of the central mechanisms leading to this remarkable royal success. By analysing the production, distribution and perception of royal photographs in a variety of European countries, this article shows that these images were a crucial means by which royal families were turned into powerful symbols of modern nations. Regularly made by the most renowned portrait photographers and widely distributed via the press and as postcards and personal commemorative gifts, royal photographs allowed monarchies to acquire an absolutely vital asset for their survival at the head of modern European societies, namely strong emotional bonds between individual members of the general public and royal families.

Der Autor vergleicht die Trauerbekundungen nach Prinzessin Dianas tödlichem Autounfall mit denen nach dem gleichermaßen "modernen" Tod von Königin Astrid der Belgier, die 1935 bei einem touristischen Ausflug in der Schweiz ums Leben kam. Ähnlich wie die Princess of Wales war Astrid jung, schön und Mutter der Thronfolger, als sie starb. Anders als bei Diana und Charles war die Eheschließung mit dem belgischen Thronfolger Leopold jedoch wohl eine echte Liebesheirat gewesen, und so erschien der frühe Tod um so tragischer, als König Leopold selbst am Steuer des Wagens gesessen hatte. Ansonsten finden sich hier wiederum dieselben "Ingredienzen", die bei der Ikonisierung und Mythisierung früh versterbender, "staatstragender" Frauengestalten gerne Verwendung finden: nationaler Vergemeinschaftungsanlaß, Identifikationsgelegenheit für vorbildliche oder prekäre Geschlechterverhältnisse sowie Objekt der Begierde für populäre Medien. This book not only shows that multilingualism was no obstacle for the development of national identity—in both countries it was used as a positive means of collective identification —it also demonstrates that other means of identification were much more important. These were found on a national and supra-linguistic level—in Belgium the Royal Family and in Switzerland the Alps—and on a local and sublinguistic level—in Belgium mainly the provinces and in Switzerland the cantons. This study also shows that, contrary to what might be expected, Belgium was often more successful than Switzerland in constructing and adapting its national identity, especially in the inter-war years. Combining written and iconographic sources found in the archives of the national banks, mints and Post Offices in Berne and Brussels this book furthermore fills in an important historiographical gap using stamps, coins and banknotes as historical sources for the first time. Often neglected by historians, Alexis Schwarzenbach successfully argues that these sources have to be seen as important lieux de mernoire and that they are ideally suited for the study of the interrelated topics of memory and identity. ; -- 1. Nicht zufällig hat sich ein Schweizer Historiker mit der 50-jährigen Geschichte des World Wide Fund For Nature auseinandergesetzt. Schliesslich wurde die Naturschutzorganisation, eine der gröt︢en der Welt, 1961 in der Schweiz gegründet. Alexis Schwarzenbach, dessen Biografien seiner Urgrossmutter Renée Schwarzenbach ("Die Geborene", 2004) und seiner Grosstante Annemarie Schwarzenbach ("Auf der Schwelle des Fremden", 2008) hier nicht vorgestellt wurden, hat Archive verschiedener Länderorganisationen (u.a. USA, England, Niederlande) und bisher nicht veröffentlichte Materialien eingesehen sowie Personen interviewt, die für die Organisation prägend waren. Daraus ist eine faktenreiche, kritische und mit grossem Gewinn zu lesende Zusammenschau entstanden, die mit zahlreichen, zumeist doppelseitigen Farbfotos vorzüglich illustriert und sehr ansprechend layoutet ist. Zum 40. Jubiläum gab es, grossformatig und repräsentativ, "Das grosse Buch des WWF" (ID-G 20/04). Im Anhang: Zeittafel der WWF-Umweltarbeit, Bibliografie, Sach- und Personenregister. Es ist wenig zum Thema greifbar. Daher vorrangig empfohlen. (1)

Die 1920er Jahre stehen wie kein anderes Jahrzehnt für Aufbrüche und Rückfälle. In keiner anderen Periode des 20. Jahrhunderts war die Sehnsucht der Menschen nach Neuerungen wohl so gross wie zu jener Zeit. Urbanistische Visionen wurden entworfen, Städte wuchsen in rasanter Geschwindigkeit, klassische gesellschaftliche -Rollenbilder wurden hinterfragt und aufgebrochen, benachteiligte bzw. unterdrückte Minderheiten -verschafften sich Gehör in Kultur und Politik. An die Seite eines die Interessen der Arbeiter be-rücksichtigenden Alltags gesellte sich eine -wachsende Freizeitindustrie. Der hohe Innova-tionsgrad dieser Zeit fand direkten Niederschlag in der Experimentierfreudigkeit der Künste. Überraschend ist, dass deren Erzeugnisse nichts von ihrer Aktualität eingebüsst haben. Anders als bei vielen Ausstellungen, die sich den 1920er Jahren gewidmet haben, werden Schau und Buch Stilrichtungen wie Bauhaus, Dada, Neue Sachlichkeit sowie Design- und Architekturikonen des Modernismus nicht separat betrachten, sondern sie in Dialog setzen, wodurch die Stilheterogenität jener Aufbruchsjahre besonders deutlich hervortritt. Der Fokus richtet sich auf Berlin, Paris, Wien und Zürich, dabei werden alle Medien wie Malerei, Plastik, Zeichnung, Fotografie, Film und Collage erfasst. Auch soll den weniger bekannten Positionen, insbesondere denen von Frauen, eine Plattform geboten werden. Zeitgenössische Künstler- innen und Künstler, die sich explizit mit der Formen-sprache und den Themenstellungen der 1920er Jahre befassen, schlagen die Brücke in unsere Gegenwart

How many "bodies" does a queen have? What is the significance of multiple "bodies"? How has the gendered body been constructed and perceived within the context of the European courts during the course of the past five centuries? These are some of the questions addressed in this anthology, a contribution to the ongoing debate provoked by Ernst H. Kantorowicz in his seminal work from 1957, The King's Two Bodies. On the basis of both textual self-presentations and visual representations a gradual transformation of the queen appears: A sacred/providential figure in medieval and early modern period, an ideal bourgeois wife during the late-18th and 19th Centuries, and a star-like (re-) presentation of royalty during the past century. Twentieth-century mass media has produced the celebrity and film star queens personified by the contested and enigmatic Nefertiti of ancient Egypt, the mysterious Elizabeth (Sisi) of Austria, Grace Kelly as Queen of both Hollywood and Monaco and Romy Schneider as the invented Empress

In Europe, love has been given a prominent place in European self-representations from the Enlightenment onwards. The category of love, stemming from private and personal spheres, was given a public function and used to distinguish European civilisation from others. Contributors to this volume trace historical links and analyse specific connections between the two discourses on love and Europe over the course of the twentieth century, exploring the distinctions made between the public and private, the political and personal. In doing so, this volume develops an innovative historiography that includes such resources as autobiographies, love letters, and cinematic representations, and takes issue with the exclusivity of Eurocentrism. Its contributors put forth hypotheses about the historical pre-eminence of emotions and consider this history as a basis for a non-Eurocentric understanding of new possible European identities
