Seit etwa 2000 wurde von der Forschung eine neue Lebensphase entdeckt, die zwischen Jugend und Erwachsenalter steht und durch spezifische Merkmale wie ein Hinausschieben von Markern des Erwachsenseins und einen erhöhter Narzissmus gekennzeichnet ist. Seit der Konzeption von Erikson lässt sich des Weiteren eine starke zeitliche Verzögerung und qualitative Veränderung der Identitätsentwicklung belegen. Studien zeigen, dass diese Veränderungen in der gesamten Alterskohorte, wenn auch mit leichten ausbildungsabhängigen Unterschieden, bestehen. Wir können also nicht mehr länger von einer pathologisch prolongierten Adoleszenz sprechen, wie dies Blos vor 50 Jahren konzeptualisierte, sondern müssen von einer normativen Veränderung sprechen, die für sich keinen Krankheitswert hat, sondern ganz im Gegenteil von einem Privileg für Wenige zu einer Chance für (fast) alle geworden ist. Diese These wird durch die Zusammenschau von psychoanalytischen Konzepten und zahlreichen empirischen Befunden an jungen Erwachsenen in Deutschland belegt.

In the past, the tasks of establishing psychological and practical independence were linked in time. Nowadays, these transitions are no longer successively manageable sequences; rather, they are characterized by fluctuations, discontinuities, and reversals. In this review, research findings on factors contributing to the diversity in emerging adults' leaving home patterns (including early leaving, late leaving, or continued residence in the parents' home) are summarized. These findings show that although culture, gender, social class, and education shape leaving home patterns, individual factors (e.g., emerging adults' attachment representations or their progress in the domains of love and work), and parenting strategies that essentially keep the child emotionally and physically in close proximity are also influential. The review reveals that leaving home is an important developmental task for both emerging adult children and their parents and illustrates how linked their lives are.

AbstractFuture‐ and school‐related stressors are salient for adolescents from different regions of the world, and they cope with these stressors competently.

This review identifies key issues in research on adolescent coping with stress with parents, friends, and romantic partners during the past decade. An analysis of 78 studies revealed findings on relationship stressors and the potential links between the use of different coping styles for different relationship types. Research has confirmed consistent gender differences in dealing with relationship stress and shown how individual factors (e.g., personality factors and attachment style) contribute to variations in stress perception and coping styles. Implications for prevention and intervention are identified and suggestions are made for future research, particularly with respect to complex and important developmental questions that have not yet been fully addressed.

In a longitudinal study on 93 participants, the relationships between leaving home, developmental task progression, and the amount of parental support were analyzed over a time span of 11 years. Three different leaving-home patterns emerged: on-time leavers, late leavers/returners, and those still residing with their parents at ages 21 to 25. Aspirations with respect to the attainment of developmental tasks specific to adolescence and emerging adulthood did not differ between individuals with different leaving-home patterns. Perceived developmental task progression during adolescence was influential, but the more recent developmental task progression during emerging adulthood was even more predictive for different leaving-home outcomes. The amounts of fathers' and mothers' support during adolescence were found to be important predictors of the timing of leaving home.

So far, there is a dearth of research comparing identity processes across cultures and its contributing factors. In this study, the association of individual and family factors with identity processes was analyzed in 2,113 emerging adults ( M = 22.0 years; 66% female) from France, Germany, Greece, Peru, Pakistan, Poland, and Turkey. Exploration and commitment levels were highest in non-Western countries like Peru, Turkey, and Pakistan, whereas emerging adults in France scored lowest in exploration and commitment and reported highest levels in identity distress, internalizing/externalizing symptoms, and identity diffusion. Identity distress, coping with identity distress, parental behavior, and mental health were regressed on identity processes (exploration breadth/depth, commitment, and ruminative exploration). Distinctive patterns emerged; high identity distress, high identity diffusion, and high maternal anxious rearing in all countries were related to ruminative exploration. Findings were interpreted with a focus on universal and distinctive pathways in different countries in changing times.

In a 3-year longitudinal study on 989 emerging adults, we assessed self-efficacy in dealing with work–family conflicts and different indices of work and relationships characteristics (e.g., satisfaction, commitment, and stress). In addition, we assessed different indices of health functioning (e.g., sick days, body complaints, internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and well-being). Latent class growth analyses revealed three different trajectories of competence with work-to-partnership conflicts over time that were related to work, romantic relationships, and health. Emerging adults in the high stable group (characterized by high levels of self-efficacy in dealing with conflicts in work and partnerships) remained in considerably better health than those in the other two groups. Emerging adults following the moderate increasing and the low increasing trajectories (e.g., with increasing competencies, starting from moderate and low mean levels in self-efficacy in dealing with work–partnership conflicts), experienced a stable commitment with their partners but more partnership–work conflicts over time. Their job satisfaction also increased over time. Overall health improved in those following the low increasing trajectory but remained considerably lower than in the other two groups. Results are interpreted with respect to the challenges but also the costs of efforts involved in adapting to the difficult transitions in the domains of love and work.
