Bildgebende und diagnostische Verfahren, Therapien und Therapieentscheidungen, aber auch Pflege, Datenverwaltung und Abrechnung: IT-gestützte Prozesse greifen immer tiefer in die Arbeit mit und an Patient*innen ein. Die digitale Technik verändert hierbei Prozesse und Wissensbestände in Medizin und Pflege und entwickelt sich so zu einem potenziell dritten Akteur zwischen Patient*in und Versorger*in. Die Beiträge des Bandes widmen sich dieser Technisierung aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive u.a. mit Fragen zu Ethik, Selbstbestimmung und gesellschaftlicher Auseinandersetzung. Damit tragen sie zur kritischen Reflexion der gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen bei und loten deren Chancen und Risiken aus.

This article shows how fundamental debates on both human obsolescence in the form of vanishing human exceptionalism and of technological unem- ployment were anchored to the emerging technology of artificial intelligence (AI). Through this anchoring, these debates became tangible and they were discussed beyond scientific circles by the wider public too. Thus the technol­ ogy on the one hand and the scientific and social debates on human obsoles­ cence on the other hand entered into a phase of co­evolution. We will first discuss the computer metaphor since it not only prepared the idea of AI but also was the culture medium for the connection between the technology and the obsolescence debates. In the second half of the article, we then discuss this connection in the context of human exceptionalism, followed by the context of technological unemployment. Next to prominent examples from Anglo-American AI research as well as cybernetics and psychology we look at German-language examples. That the spread of the anchoring of debate to technology goes beyond scientific circles is made clear by looking at science fiction and broadsheet newspapers and magazines.

"The well-known distinction between soft and hard science cuts a sharp line of demarcation
between hard and soft facts of scientific studies. Physics deal with precise
hard facts characteristically whereas social sciences are confronted with imprecise
soft social facts because social facts are notoriously vague, interpretative facts of
meaning. Therefore Fuzzy logic seems to fit perfectly the needs of social scientist
that look for mathematical precise models to deal with vague, imprecise data [52].
In this contribution we discuss the usefulness of Fuzzy logic for social sciences in
general, and especially sociology. In a first step we summarize some fundamentals
of 'fuzzy thinking' for social scientist. This will lead to the discussion of the
need of fuzzy thinking in action theory, systems theory, modernization theory and
empirical research.We discuss the advantage of fuzzy thinking for action theory and
social systems theory at length whereas the discussion of fuzzy thinking in modernization
theory and empirical research falls short. Modernization theory and empirical
research just function as further examples for the need and usefulness of fuzzy thinking." (excerpt)

Dieser Sammelband behandelt wissenschaftlich-technische Arbeiten, Gruppierungen und Ereignisse, die am Anfang der Forschungen zur Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI) in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland standen. Dazu wurden Beispiele aus fünf Forschungsgebieten ausgesucht, die in den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren in der bundesdeutschen KI Bedeutung erlangten: Automatisches Beweisen, Sprach- und Bildverarbeitung, Expertensysteme und Kognitionswissenschaft. Sie standen bisher noch nie im Fokus historischer Forschung. Die Genese der KI-Forschung als Teilgebiet der bundesdeutschen Informatik ist, wie dieser Sammelband zeigt, als historischer Prozess zu verstehen, der sich aus der Zusammenführung von Forschungssträngen aus unterschiedlichen Wissenschaftsdisziplinen speiste. Mit den hier vorliegenden Arbeiten sind erste Mosaiksteine für eine fundierte KI-Geschichte Deutschlands gelegt, die auch ein halbes Jahrhundert nach ihren Anfängen noch ein Desiderat ist.
