This paper examines the figure of the hate-fighting digital vigilante as embodied through Aryan Queen, an online persona developed and depicted by self-proclaimed antifa member Talia Lavin in her book Culture Warlords. One chapter in the 2020 memoir relays Lavin's pursuits to elicit and make known identifying information of Der Stürmer, an anonymous white supremacist online hater. I first locate Lavin's undertaking in the porous policy landscape regulating online hate transnationally to make a case for its value as an entry into the navigation of hate on Telegram, a platform that has become a popular enclave for hate, and one that remains otherwise impenetrable to state efforts at formal governance. I then introduce the digital vigilante as a cultural figure that has become increasingly distinguished from, but developed in relation to, the classical or analogue vigilante in academic literature, albeit with only limited attention paid to the seemingly boundless temporality that constitutes the virtual sphere. Attending to processes of temporalization, I argue, can well serve an analysis of the moral universe within which the digital vigilante operates, thereby enabling a critical engagement with the motivations, methods, and intentions of her justice pursuits online. With the support of anthropological theories of temporalization – namely, past presencing, un/doing futures, and affective justice – I show that justice pursuits by way of digital vigilantism for Lavin are entangled with an affective longing for revenge, and manifest a complex intermingling of open wounds from injustices that emerge from and produce entanglements of the past, present, and future.

Wie kann kulturanthropologische Forschung die politischen Kämpfe sozialer Bewegungen unterstützen, ohne dabei andere wissenschaftliche Ziele aus den Augen zu verlieren? In diesem Beitrag gehen wir von unserer kollaborativen Forschung mit HIV/Aids-Aktivist*innen aus, um zu eruieren, wie Sozial- und Geschichtswissenschaften mit sozialen Bewegungen - politisch und wissensgenerierend - zusammenarbeiten können. Wir schlagen vor, Kollaborationen methodologisch als "friction" (Tsing 2013) zu denken, als spannungsreiche Begegnungen über Differenzen hinweg, die, obwohl in ihrem Ausgang stets unvorsehbar, über epistemologische und politische Potential verfügen. Anhand von Beispiele zeigen wir, wie eine engagierte Kulturanthropologie zu einer Politik der Koalitionsbildung beitragen kann, indem sie die Grenzen zwischen Wissensfeldern sowie zwischen Aktivismus und Wissenschaft überbrückt und dabei zugleich anerkennt, dass alle Beteiligten immer auch eigene, sich verändernde und nicht zwangsläufig deckungsgleiche Ziele verfolgen. ; How can cultural anthropologists contribute to the political struggles of social movements without losing sight of their other research goals? In this paper, we take our collaborative research with HIV/AIDS activists as a starting point to explore how scholars engaging with ethnographic and historical research can collaborate with social movement activists - politically, and with the aim of generating knowledge. To this end, we propose methodologically grasping collaboration as relations with "friction" (Tsing 2013) - i.e. as tense encounters across differences, which, although always unpredictable in their outcome, have epistemological and political potentialities. Using examples from this project, we show how an engaged cultural anthropology can contribute to a politics of coalition-building by bridging the boundaries between fields of knowledge, and between activism and academia while, at the same time, recognizing that all participants always pursue their own, shifting, and not necessarily congruent, goals. ; Peer Reviewed

Mobilising a queer theoretical framework, by which we mean embracing unhappiness, ephemerality, and instability, this chapter reflects on processes of archiving oral histories as part of the European HIV/AIDS Archive (EHAA). It presents selected challenges and tensions that lie at the heart of remembering, narrating, and archiving the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the broader European region. The EHAA, an online collection of oral history interviews and digitised materials, has been developed to further establish HIV/AIDS history as part of the broader social memory, so as to work through the trauma of mass death and social discrimination and to document innovations, tensions, and inconsistencies in engaging with the epidemic across the region. Building on a growing interest in archiving histories of HIV activism across Europe and North America, the EHAA project dates back to efforts by the 'AIDS History into Museums Working Group' to preserve such histories in Germany. The project was further developed and expanded in two research projects: 'Disentangling European HIV/AIDS Policies: Activism, Citizenship and Health' and 'Don't Criminalize Passion! The AIDS Crisis and Political Mobilization in the 1980s and early 1990s in Germany'. Explicitly deviating from an investment in offspring as a route for the transmission of memory, the EHAA joins other queer archival work imagined as sites for handing down queer history. This chapter argues that the EHAA contributes to queer memory work as a necessary revision of public remembrance and current perceptions of the epidemic, and, at the same time, as a source of inspiration for future activism.

We use the concept of the 'monster' in this article as an analytical tool to grasp a variety of persons who – understood to be criminals in their countries of residence, and living with or thought to be particularly vulnerable to HIV – are perceived as threats from across the European region. Building on the field of monster studies, we focus here on strategies undertaken to shift the 'monstrous' towards the 'human' along what we describe as monster–human continuums. Relying on ethnographic fieldwork from Germany, Poland and Greece, four case studies examine processes of (re-)humanisation in the fields of migration, prisons, drug use and sex work that emerge at the intersections of humanitarianism, public health, human rights and citizenship. In particular, we propose that these strategies can entail the production of dissimilar forms of political subjectivity, the redistribution of responsibility or vulnerability and a reshuffling of blame within the moral economy of innocence and guilt – strategies that produce particular norms and forms of the human. These strategies, moreover, involve the normalisation or suppression of 'abnormal', 'irrational' or 'guilty' dimensions of criminalised subjects, thereby taming their capacity to confuse or confront societies' worldviews, and ultimately foreclosing the possibility to imagine a being-in-the-world otherwise. We thus conclude by asking how embracing the monstrous might facilitate the navigation of cultural, social and moral anxieties that leave room for complex and conflicting practices and subjectivities.
