For the purpose, it takes the case of floods of varying intensity as examples of extreme climate events and compares the decrease in income resulting from the current crisis with the one resulting from climate policies. In studies both effects in terms of subjective well-being, and concludes that while the perception of risk reduces life satisfaction, this is not always the case with income reduction.

The four-year NATURVATION project (2016-2020), funded through the EU Horizon 2020 Programme, seeks to map and analyse existing experiences and practices in the use of nature-based solutions (NBS) to understand what enables NBS innovations and ultimately use this knowledge to inform policy and practice. One of the tasks of the project was to analyse the processes, mechanisms and tools which support or hinder nature-based innovations and their systemic integration. This report explores the dynamics and politics of urban NBS innovations by comparing governance arrangements, public participation, financing mechanisms, innovation patterns and social impacts associated with the emergence and deployment of 54 NBS interventions grouped in a number ofphysical domains in 18 cities worldwide. The 18 cities covered in this report include NATURVATION's six partner cities (Barcelona, Győr, Leipzig, Newcastle, Malmö, and Utrecht), six non-European cities (Boston, Cape Town, Melbourne,Mexico City, Tianjin, and Winnipeg) and six other European cities (Athens, Dublin, Edinburgh, Montpellier, Munich, and Sofia). The cities and their NBS were systematically selected based on criteria and methods developed by WP4 convenors to ensure the representation of diverse urban and environmental conditions, while also taking the diversity of ecological domains and aspects ofinnovation into account.

Degrowth is the literal translation of 'decroissance', a French word meaning reduction. Launched by activists in 2001 as a challenge to growth, it became a missile word that sparks a contentious debate on the diagnosis and prognosis of our society. 'Degrowth' became an interpretative frame for a new (and old) social movement where numerous streams of critical ideas and political actions converge. It is an attempt to re-politicise debates about desired socio-environmental futures and an example of an activist-led science now consolidating into a concept in academic literature. This article discusses the definition, origins, evolution, practices and construction of degrowth. The main objective is to explain degrowth's multiple sources and strategies in order to improve its basic definition and avoid reductionist criticisms and misconceptions. To this end, the article presents degrowth's main intellectual sources as well as its diverse strategies (oppositional activism, building of alternatives and political proposals) and actors (practitioners, activists and scientists). Finally, the article argues that the movement's diversity does not detract from the existence of a common path. The last half-a-century has seen a marked demand for authentic citizen participation in public policy-and decision-making, not least in the field of sustainability. The depth and forms of citizen engagement in nature-based solutions (NBS), for example, and how such participation shapes their trajectories is gaining increasing attention. In this paper, we analyze current forms and implications of citizen participation in 58 NBS case studies conducted in 21 cities in the light of supporting wider sustainability goals. Our results show that while tokenistic forms dominate citizen participation across a variety of NBS contexts, collaborative multi-stakeholder forms of engagement do not automatically lead to enhanced ecological functions. Deeper forms of engagement, however, strengthen and diversify both expected and unexpected social outcomes, including social learning, enhanced sense of belonging, environmental stewardship, and inclusiveness and equity, in general. Driven by neoliberal austerity logic governments often cede power to NBS promoters whose interests predefine an intervention's vision of nature. Deeper levels of participation are hence limited by inherent institutional structures, neoliberal regimes and the lack of trust among actors involved. These limitations can be partially bridged by strengthening relational and reflexive capacities of public institutions. Focusing on the process of citizen engagement and creating multiple arenas for discussion could bring out new voices and narratives and also transform the culture of participation.

This book uses a unique typology of ten core drivers of injustice to explore and question common assumptions around what urban sustainability means, how it can be implemented, and how it is manifested in or driven by urban interventions that hinge on claims of sustainability.

Aligned with critical environmental justice studies, the book highlights the contradictions of urban sustainability in relation to justice. It argues that urban neighbourhoods cannot be greener, more sustainable and liveable unless their communities are strengthened by the protection of the right to housing, public space, infrastructure and healthy amenities. Linked to the individual drivers, ten short empirical case studies from across Europe and North America provide a systematic analysis of research, policy and practice conducted under urban sustainability agendas in cities such as Barcelona, Glasgow, Athens, Boston and Montréal, and show how social and environmental justice is, or is not, being taken into account. By doing so, the book uncovers the risks of continuing urban sustainability agendas while ignoring, and therefore perpetuating, systemic drivers of inequity and injustice operating within and outside of the city.

Accessibly written for students in urban studies, critical geography and planning, this is a useful and analytical synthesis of issues relating to urban sustainability, environmental and social justice.

Umweltpolitische Themen gewinnen an Bedeutung für die internationale Politik. In der Praxis erscheinen ökologische Bedenken gegenüber dem Wachstumsimperativ jedoch oft als Papiertiger. Dieses Buch diskutiert am Beispiel der Rohstoffpolitik die politischen, wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Konsequenzen einer intensivierten Rohstoffausbeutung sowie die damit verbundenen sozialökologischen Konflikte. Außerdem werden Vorschläge für Alternativen zum dominanten Wachstumsmodell analysiert und Anregungen für eine Neujustierung des Entwicklungsbegriffs gegeben.
