El trabajo social ocurre en varios escenarios y es capaz de producir opinión pública. Desde muy temprano en la historia de la profesión en Puerto Rico, los trabajadores y trabajadoras sociales se insertaron en las escuelas. El objetivo principal del presente estudio fue de conocer la opinión de un grupo de la Federación de Maestros de Puerto Rico sobre los trabajadores y las trabajadoras sociales. La muestra constó de 74 participantes cuya mayoría mostró una opinión positiva hacia los y las profesionales del trabajo social. El 35 por ciento de la muestra no creía que estos y estas debían participar en procesos de política pública. Se encontró una relación directa entre la experiencia de maestros y maestras con profesionales del trabajo social y su opinión hacia estos y estas. Presentamos nuestro análisis y recomendaciones ante estos resultados.

AIDS related stigma continues to impact the lives of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) negatively. Although the consequences of stigmatization have been widely documented, certain areas of study need to be further addressed in order to better understand their implications for PLWHA; such is the case of the perceptions of the bodys role in AIDS stigma. A qualitative study was implemented including 30 in-depth interviews of PLWHA in Puerto Rico in order to explore their perceptions of the bodys role in the process of stigmatization. Results include: participants perceptions on how their bodies evidence their serostatus, description of past body marks, personal experiences with body marks, meanings attributed to their bodies with HIV/AIDS, and personal criteria used to describe the perfect body. These issues are described in the context of the social stigma faced by PLWHA in Puerto Rico and individual perceptions of bodys role in the process of self-stigmatization. Recommendations for intervention and research are described.

In this study, we explored the contextual elements that influence the construction of male gender roles and sexuality among Puerto Rican heterosexual male college students. We conducted three focus groups with students of the University of Puerto Rico. Sessions were transcribed and content analyzed. Participants believed that gender roles are prescribed mainly through mass media and family. The mass media stresses men's capacity to have frequent sexual relations with multiple partners and take many sexual risks. Men are also socialized to control their emotions and to be dominant.Sexuality is still taboo in the family and church. Safer sex messages are not encouraged and some conceptions of gender roles and sexuality contradict prevention messages. The relevance of these notions for sexuality and men's health is discussed.

In previous studies, psychologists have identified the perception they believe legislators have of their discipline as a barrier to their participation in public policy processes. In this study we explored legislators' perception and the experience on which it is based. We surveyed legislators and their aides for the 2004-2008 electoral period in Puerto Rico. Results showed that legislators and their staff had limited experience with psychologists, their perception of their roles and tasks is adequate, and they believe psychologists should participate in public policy processes. We discuss the implications of these results so as to promote psychologists' participation in the legislative setting. ; En estudios previos sobre la participación de los psicólogos/as en procesos de política pública, se ha informado que la percepción que estos/as creen que existe en la Legislatura sobre la psicología es una barrera a su participación. En este estudio exploramos esta percepción y la experiencia en la cual se fundamenta. Para esto encuestamos a un grupo de legisladores/as y asesores/as del cuatrienio del 2004-2008 en Puerto Rico. Encontramos que estas personas han tenido poca experiencia con los psicólogos/as, tienen una percepción acertada de los roles y tareas de la profesión, y entienden que los psicólogos/ as deben participar en procesos de política pública. Discutimos las implicaciones de estos hallazgos para fomentar la participación de los psicólogos/as en el escenario legislativo.
