The mustang has long been a symbol of the American West: wild, untamed, free, rugged, individual. Today, though, actual wild mustangs are at the center of a civic controversy, and their populations are controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and contested by ranchers, environmentalists, animal welfare groups, historic preservationists, and others.

Rosie the Riveter wasn't always a feminist icon. Her roots lie in inspiring Westinghouse workers toward the war effort, and it wasn't until the 1950s and '60s that women's rights movements reframed the way we see Rosie.

In the U.S. today, women's bodies, more often than men's, are used as symbols of sex. Women's bodies are used to sexualize a space (for instance, go-go dancers at a night club), make a product seem sexy (e.g., in many ad campaigns for hard liquor), or simply incite sexual desire (as in pornography). It should be no surprise, then, that sex is used to sell food and that, when it is, it typically involves both sexualizing and gendering the food product. We see this in at least three ways.

This paper discusses how gender dynamics may put female researchers at risk of harassment or even violence from participants, research assistants, or bystanders when conducting fieldwork. Based on a review of the existing literature on fieldwork safety, as well as the authors' own experiences interviewing male participants, the authors argue that attention to protecting subjects of research has led the social science community to largely ignore the possibility that in some cases, researchers themselves may be at risk. The paper concludes with suggested strategies for increasing researcher safety during data collection, as well as a call for issues of fieldwork safety to be more openly discussed by supervisors, professors, advisors, and others who guide novice researchers through the fieldwork process.
