Background: Previous research has established that childhood emotional abuse has long-term, negative consequences for adult mental health. Yet, less is known about the ways that social relationship and education intersect to shape the link between childhood emotional abuse and mental health in adulthood. Aim: The current study aims to examine whether perceived quality of social relationships moderates the association between childhood emotional abuse and adult mental health. Moreover, it assesses how the moderating effect of perceived quality of social relationship differs across levels of education. Method: The current study analyzes data from the 2012 Korean General Social Survey, a nationally representative sampling of Korean adults. It uses OLS regression models. Results: Childhood emotional abuse is positively associated with depression and psychological distress in adulthood. However, perceived quality of social relationships mitigates the positive association of childhood emotional abuse with depression and psychological distress. Further, this buffering effect of perceived quality of social relationships operates only for individuals with less than or equal to a high school education, but not for individuals with college education or more. Conclusion: The results lend support to the resource substitution thesis, suggesting that positive perceptions of social relationship act as a protective factor against childhood emotional abuse for individuals with lower levels of education.

AbstractObjectiveThe goal was to examine (a) how parental involvement affects mental health in left‐behind children (LBC), and (b) how the interaction effect of parental involvement and grandparent involvement affects mental health in LBC.BackgroundGiven the rapid industrialization and urbanization in China, a substantial number of rural laborers have migrated to cities to earn a living. However, it is difficult for many children to stay with their parents and they have to be left behind.MethodsThe sample consisted of 309 left‐behind children who had grandparents to care for them. The participants completed the Inventory of Father Involvement, Inventory of Mother Involvement, Inventory of Closest Grandparent Involvement, Needs Satisfaction Questionnaire, and Emotional Experience of Well‐being Questionnaire.ResultsNeeds satisfaction mediated the effect of father involvement on emotional well‐being (EWB) and the effect of mother involvement on EWB in LBC. The closest grandparent involvement of LBC moderated the effect of mother involvement on needs satisfaction, but it did not moderate the effect of father involvement on needs satisfaction. The closest grandparent involvement of LBC moderated the indirect effect of mother involvement on EWB through needs satisfaction.ConclusionsNeeds satisfaction is an essential mediator between parental involvement and EWB. Grandparental involvement of LBC plays a complementary role in mother involvement. Their interaction effect facilitates the fulfilment of needs, and improves their EWB in LBC.ImplicationsThe mental health of LBC can be improved by helping their mothers and grandparents to meet various needs of LBC.

Emerging high-phenolic sweeteners impart a sweet taste to foods and beverages, and are desirable sugar alternatives. Most refined sugars have a low antioxidant content due to polyphenol degradation occurring during sugar refining. Natural sweeteners such as honey, molasses, and dark brown sugar possess moderate to high phenolic content. Other phytochemicals found in natural sweeteners are carotenoids, organic acids, and terpenoids. Additionally, molasses and syrups synthesised from anthocyanin-rich fruits and roots contain anthocyanins apart from flavonoids. Non-nutritive sweeteners, such as sugar alcohols, are low in calories besides their sweet taste. Sweet proteins, dihydrochalcones, phenolics, and terpenoid derivatives are emerging sweeteners. These sweet substances are effective antioxidants that could help reduce oxidative stress in the human body although the amount ingested is usually low. The present review emphasised specific natural, high-phenolic, and other sweet compounds, and examined the antioxidative characteristics of these sweeteners. The risk of excessive ingestion of these sweet substances is yet to be proven.

AbstractCurrently, many countries are striving to transform and upgrade their manufacturing industries. Manufacturing development strategies such as Industry 4.0 have attracted a lot of attention from both industry and academia. To provide a fundamental basis and reference for the development of China's manufacturing industry, this study reviews the key concept and implementation mechanism of Industry 4.0. After analysing main problems existing in China's manufacturing industry, this study provides a key strategy for the transformation and upgrade of China's manufacturing industry. A digital manufacturing ecosystem framework is also proposed to explore theoretical and practical significance of this strategy.

Purpose: This study investigates Chinese college students' satisfaction with using e-learning systems and its influences on their sense of online classroom community in synchronous, asynchronous, or a blend of both synchronous and asynchronous online course format during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A total number of 307 college students were recruited with 270 usable responses from a southeastern university in China. E-learner satisfaction measurement and Classroom Community Scale (both with a 5-point Likert-type scale) were used as the instruments to investigate the research questions. Descriptive statistical analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted in SPSS. Results: Results of the analysis show that Chinese college students' satisfaction of using the e-learning system regarding the learner interface, learning community, content, and personalization positively impacts their sense of online classroom community no matter in synchronous, asynchronous, or a blend of both synchronous and asynchronous online course format. Implications: A well-developed e-learning system would enhance students' sense of online classroom community. Specifically, the user interface, interaction, content arrangement, and personalization should be focused on when developing the e-learning system.
