Shui-bian, current president of the Republic of China on Taiwan & Chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), discusses the nature of contemporary Chinese-Taiwanese relations & Taiwan's political & economic objectives. After considering Taiwan's political & economic status, certain issues that the current Taiwanese regime must address are identified, eg, the need to immediately revitalize the Taiwanese economy. Questions concerning whether the present Taiwanese administration is attempting to normalize relations with the People's Republic of China (PRC) & whether Taiwan is pursuing economic & political integration with the PRC are then addressed. After considering the issue of whether serving as DPP Chairperson & President of Taiwan presents certain conflicts for Chen Shui-bian, the current Taiwanese administration's principal complaints against the PRC & foreign policy expectations from the US are contemplated. President Chen Shui-bian describes advances in civil and legal rights since his Mar. 2000 election as Taiwan's first non-Kuomintang (KMT) president and challenges Taiwan faces in implementing reforms due to the legacy of the KMT's 57 years of authoritarian, one-party rule and the country's international isolation during much of that period.
