Economic Development and the Myth of Laissez Faire: Germany and France in the Nineteenth Century
In: Scandinavian journal of development alternatives and area studies, Band 18, Heft 2-3, S. 167-176
ISSN: 0280-2791
This paper challenges the belief that laissez-faire, or market-based, economic policies promote economic development. In fact, when examining the cases of Germany & France in the nineteenth century, extensive state intervention was necessary to promote economic development. Similar cases can be made for other European nations & the US. The conclusion is that market-oriented approaches to economic development should be viewed with a skeptical eye. 22 References.
