This paper reports on data being collected on Intravenous drug abusers (IVDAs), their sexual partners and the spread of HIV among them in the cities of Dayton and Columbus, Ohio. Findings are reported on some 253 subjects in Dayton and 164 subjects in Columbus. The sample in each city was predominantly black males, with a mean age of 36 years. In both cities, the reservoir of HIV infection remains quite low among IVDAs and sex partners. In Dayton among 330 tested, only 1.11% were seropositive; in Columbus among 392 tested, 1.53% tested positive for the AIDS virus. The paper discusses these findings from the perspectives of the epidemiology of the HIV, needle-use patterns, and lifestyles of the region's IVDAs and sex partners.

The innovative, successful and widely replicated Weekend Intervention Program (WIP) has been highly effective in identifying and intervening with persons charged with alcohol (and other drug) related driving offenses. WIP's model approach allows a high degree of specificity in assigning individuals to the most appropriate treatment setting and successfully prepares the offender for the substance abuse services to be received, therefore, addressing a major impediment to successful treatment — early drop out. Expanded utilization of a program such as WIP can greatly enhance the therapeutic and cost effectiveness of criminal justice system treatment efforts and help establish a viable productive partnership between the criminal justice system and the substance abuse treatment community. In this article the authors describe WIP, its clinical approach and evaluation, and comment upon the benefits of its wider use.

AbstractThe trends are explored through which criminologists and other social scientists are being pushed out of academia and finding their way into the private sector, especially in the area of "deviance research." In this research area, within the private sector, the work of thecontract researcher is discussed. The relationship between contract researcher and client is compared to that of prostitute and john, one in which many hopes and expectations are created, but where the encounter satisfies neither. The organization of private, contract research is considered and concern for the uses of these studies is raised.
