While the US is experiencing a political shift toward greater support for a welfare state, radical individualism, a strong force in recent history, has undermined social democratic traditions, the proven ethical core needed for a successful welfare state. Without an adequate ethical core, powerful interest groups, rather than the public, reap the rewards of a reformed welfare state; eg, insurance companies profit by providing an individual with the means to avoid a direct obligation for the welfare of the community.
