Towards an atlas of French agricultures in the past, François Sigaut One of the difficulties of current rural history stems from the sheer accumulation of information, the sum of which overcomes the expressive possibilities of the literary narrative, even when one takes into account the help provided by computers. One possible solution, hardly new in itself, but rather neglected so far, can be found in the more systematic use of cartography, since the latter is a tool for analysis as well as for synthesis. Mapping has the long-since recognized advantages of brevity and density of information. Above all, maps necessarily imply a rigorous methodology in the collection and setting out of data ; such precision is often enough to bring about novel results from data heretofore considered as having been already explored, but actually only superficially surveyed. The proposal for an atlas which is outlined in this paper is one of several possible ways to increase the use of cartography. This proposal includes a review of several examples of this kind already published, and lists themes making possible the publication of such a work within a relatively short period of time (the concept of fallow land, the statistics of donkeys, the double contrast village /hamlet and town/ village, etc.).
