Textiles and tourism sectors are two important sectors in Portuguese economy. Its high exposure to both internal and international economy volatility transform the companies operating in these economic sectors especially vulnerable to recent economic crises in Portugal and European Union. The objective of this paper is to evaluate and understand the impact of size and age on the financial health of textile and tourism companies, measured by economic indices. An empirical based model is proposed. Its implications are derived and tested on a sample of 4061 Portuguese companies from textile and tourism sector, during the period 2005-2009. The results conclude that age has a stronger impact on the risk of failure than size. Whereas the effect of age is generally positive regarding the financial health of the company, the effect of size is less clear and depends on the age of the company.

This paper empirically examines the impact of the quality of information and control system (the internal control system, the accounting information system, the financial information, and the non-financial information) on decision-making success and business performance. It follows a quantitative approach. An online questionnaire was developed and applied to the managers of Portuguese companies. The evaluation of the theoretical model was performed using the AMOS statistical software and applying the structural equation model technique. Based on 381 observations, the results show that the model variables explain about 30% and 70% of the variance of financial and non-financial performance, respectively. This study proves to be relevant not only for the development of the literature, as it evaluates an original and complex model, but also for managers, because it identifies the factors that contribute to the success of Portuguese companies.

Dissemination of New Public Management ideology has motivated numerous studies about changes to management accounting practices in public healthcare organizations. However, few studies compare these practices on an international basis. The aim of the paper is to explore the differences and similarities in cost accounting practices within hospitals in different countries within the European Union. We follow a multiple comparative case-study approach. Qualitative data about the accounting practices of five hospitals, three from Poland and two from Portugal, are compared and discussed. Results show fairly similar models of cost accounting and an increasing need for accurately determined costs at hospitals in both countries. However, the data suggest some important differences in the way overhead is allocated. This study highlights the benefits of cross-country comparison practices. Moreover, this study points to the need for more qualitative cross-country research within management accounting topics.

As the amount of debt has gradually increased, particularly in recent years, Portugal is currently one of the European countries exhibiting one of the highest levels of overall indebtedness, including in both sovereign and private sectors. Indeed, this condition is the outcome of increasing levels of debt assumed not only by the government, but also by companies and families, being the later mostly due to mortgage loans and due charges. This paper focuses on the study of borrowing by Portuguese households. The research has been made in respect to the notion of debt, the consequences of recent developments in debt, among other factors. In order to analyse the factors that are most associated with debt, a study was developed using two multiple regression models, one using a longer time series and another shorter, evaluating the effect of several variables, such as consumption, savings, unemployment, inflation and interest rates, in order to check whether they could be associated with a higher level of debt. ; Compete;FCT

Gender diversity and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance reporting are critical to corporate sustainability. This study aims to analyze the impact of gender diversity on ESG performance reporting and the mediating effect of the workforce and sustainability reports, considering that these variables are crucial for ESG performance reporting. To achieve the objective, an empirical analysis was conducted with 207 European-listed companies belonging to the healthcare sector for the economic years 2017–2021. Our results prove that board gender diversity influences ESG performance reporting. In addition, this research shows that the workforce and sustainability reports have a positive impact on ESG performance reporting. This study does not show that the workforce and sustainability reports act as mediating variables in the relationship between gender diversity and ESG information transparency, but its inclusiveness has a significant impact on ESG performance reporting. Our results are useful for companies, investors, governments, and organizations in developing sustainability reporting standards.

The main purpose of performance appraisal in organizations is, or should be, to improve the engagement, learning process and progress of the employees and to align individual with team and organizational performance. However, performance appraisal can also be interpreted as an instrument of normalization, discipline and surveillance. This study thus aims to explore and discuss the complex schema of intrinsic and extrinsic objectives of performance appraisal system of the Portuguese public organizations (SIADAP - Performance Evaluation Integrated System). We have developed an exploratory and qualitative case study to capture appraisers and appraises perceptions. The data were analyzed in light of foucauldian theories. According to the qualitative data, namely the discourses of the appraisers and their subordinates, the SIADAP is seen as an instrument of control and dominance that aims to introduce political rationalities, limiting the career progression of the employees. Though some key points of Foucault's perspective were identified, foucauldian framework revealed some limitations to capture all the complexity inherent to performance appraisal. This study opens new perspectives about the SIADAP and can be of major importance as far as political reflection about performance appraisal in public organizations is concerned.

In Portugal, the general adoption of the International Accounting Standards was made under the SNC-Accounting Normalization System, in 2010. The SNC carried out new bookkeeping rules concerning the way government grants related to assets. While in the past these grants were treated as liabilities during the economic life of the asset, now the Accounting and Financial Reporting Standards n.º 22 (NCRF n.º 22) repor t them as an item of equity capital. This procedure is an exception to the rules stated in IAS. The aim of this study is to analyze whatever the accounting for government grants impact on equity capital and, consequently on financial ratios, of Portuguese companies in the agricultural sector. We collect financial information of 2009, from 124 enterprises operating in the agricultural sector, which had re port subsidies for investment. The sample was draw from SABI database. Our model used the amounts repor ted as "Accrued and deferred income - Income taxes - Subsidies for Investments" (old bookkeeping rules), at 31/12/2009, and estimates the values of the equity capital and financial ratios. We found a positive variation in equity capital, which corresponds to an increase of nearly 4.5%. Consequently it caused an increase of 4.7% in theindicator of financial autonomy, and also had a positive impact on the solvency ratio, with an average variation greater than 11%. Our research shows that the new bookkeeping rules have important implication in the values of some financial ratios of Portuguese companies. Even though the new bookkeeping procedures are different from those stated in IAS nº 20, Portugal opted by the same rules as those that Spain and France follow since long time ago and thus Portuguese companies are in equal competition condition to apply European Programs for financial support of investment projects, since it requires some minimum valuesat certain ratios. ; N/A
