"This book proposes the idea of interstitial space as a theoretical framework to describe and understand the implications of in-between lands in urban studies, and their profound transformative effects in cities and their urban character. The analysis of the interstitial spaces is structured in four themes; the conceptual grounds of interstitial spaces; the nature of interstices; the geographical scale of interstices; and the relationality of interstices. The empirical section of the book introduces seven cases that illustrate the varied nature of interstitiality to finally discuss its implications in the broader field of urban studies. Reflections upon further lines of enquiry and theories of urbanisation, urban sprawl, and cities are highlighted in the conclusion chapter. Urban sprawl in Latin America is described as one of the major problems of 'the growth machine'. As a reaction, most planning policies are based on anti-sprawl narratives, while in practice, urban sprawl has been thoroughly consolidated by all tiers of government. In this paper – and using the capital city of Chile, Santiago, as a case study – we challenge these anti-sprawl politics in light of the emerging environmental values and associated meanings of the interstitial spaces resulting from land fragmentation in contexts of urban sprawl. Looking at the interstitial spaces that lie between developments becomes relevant in understanding urban sprawl, considering that significant attention has been paid to the impact of the built-up space that defines the urban character of cities and their governance arrangements. We propose that looking at Santiago's urban sprawl from the interstitial spaces may contribute to the creation of more sustainable sprawling landscapes and inspire modernisations beyond anti-sprawl policies. Finally, it is suggested that a more sustainable urban development of city regions might include the environmental values of suburban interstices and consider them as assets for the creation of more comprehensive planning and policy responses to urban sprawl.

Una de las herramientas útiles para determinar la presencia y la cantidad de los huevos de parásitos en los equinos, es su examen microscópico de sus heces, por lo que en el presente trabajo se propuso establecer la eficiencia de las técnicas Mini-Flotac y McMaster en el diagnóstico de parásitos helmínticos en equinos pertenecientes al Fuerte Militar "Manabí" y Grupo de Caballería Mecanizada "Febres Cordero, así como evaluar el efecto de un desparasitante comercial (Distrosel) y su efectividad hasta el día 60 post tratamiento, para lo cual se emplearon 20 ejemplares de diferentes razas, con edades entre 5 y 15 años, de los cuales se tomaron las muestras de heces directamente del recto de los equinos y que fueron analizadas con las técnicas propuestas. Determinándose inicialmente Mini-Flotac que el 100 % de equinos fueron positivos, frente a 85 % observado con McMaster, entre técnicas no se encontró diferencias estadísticas, con recuentos de 651+596 hpg con Mini-Flotac y 504+317 hpg con McMaster y a 60 días se encontraron 299+615 y 445+641 hpg, respectivamente, siendo los equinos de Febres Cordero que presentan un mayor índice de parasitismo. El desparasitante presentó ser efectivo hasta los 15 días pos aplicación, pero a los 30 días el 10 % de animales estuvieron parasitados y a 60 días se elevó al 37.50 %, que representa un riesgo sanitario, por lo que se recomienda utilizar la técnica Mini-Flotac y elaborar programas de desparasitación para cada una de las unidades militares.

Urban sprawl has been widely discussed in regard of its economic, political, social and environmental impacts. Consequently, several planning policies have been placed to stop—or at least restrain—sprawling development. However, most of these policies have not been successful at all as anti-sprawl policies partially address only a few determinants of a multifaceted phenomenon. This includes processes of extended suburbanisation, peri-urbanisation and transformation of fringe/belt areas of city-regions. Using as a case study the capital city of Chile—Santiago—thirteen determinants of urban sprawl are identified as interlinked at the point of defining Santiago's sprawling geography as a distinctive space that deserves planning and policy approaches in its own right. Unpacking these determinants and the policy context within which they operate is important to better inform the design and implementation of more comprehensive policy frameworks to manage urban sprawl and its impacts.
