Benchmarking operations management education in the European Union
This research aimed at strategically positioning a masters targeting Operations Managers education, by pursuing a benchmarking exercise within the EdUniversal ranking. The literature review identified different roles and required skills for Industrial Engineers and Operations Managers, while the empirical study justified the choice of the other programs to be compared, confirmed the adequateness of the ranking category and the Bologna influence. The resulting SWOT analysis suggested a growth strategy based on internationalization and networking, as well as adjustments to the selection, divulgation and contents. Strategy implementation already produced as results the upgrade to the 21rst position of the EdUniversal ranking. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Finite state machine modelling of the macro-economy
In this paper we model macro-economic policies with a Finite State Machine (FSM). The FSM is made of several states and transitions between states, in which a state is modelled by a set of conditions. The allowed transitions between states must be also be defined, in order to complete the model. In this paper we analyze how to use a FSM in order to model macroeconomic decision, where each state represents a set of economic decisions. Together with some pre-defined initial conditions, these adapted FSM models are analyzed in order for us to study what sequence of decisions yield the best results for pre-determined end-goals, based on the FSM's possibilities. The final model shows what policies must be followed, and by what order, in order to maximize results, yielding some interesting conclusions. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The accomplishment of portuguese thermal code exigencies in old housing buildings' interventions
The energetic certification system was implemented in Portugal in 2006, with repercussion after 2008, and motivated by the transposition of European Energy Performance Building Directive (EPBD) from 2002. The system was reviewed in 2013, after the EPBD recast in 2010. The new legislation came up with restrictive parameters in terms of constructive solutions in order to decrease the energetic consume and Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GGE) from built environment. These parameters, such as U-values for example, are presented through reference and maximum values, and is mandatory that the analyzed building present a nominal cooling and heating needs inferior than a reference building. The thermal code is not mandatory for some buildings, considering some specific characteristics, and are an exception to the norm. It is possible not to apply it in the situation when the code compromises traditional buildings in terms of architectural value and/or patrimonial interest. The aim of this work focused on the analysis of some interventions, the existent solutions and the intervention actions, in old buildings where the thermal code was not applied. These data were compared with the thermal code exigencies in order to understand what extra efforts are required in order to accomplish the reference values and its implications in buildings architectural characteristics as well as its impact in patrimonial relevance and value. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion
