ABSTRACTA modification of Huxley's [3] mail response model is proposed. This new approach retains the simplicity and intuitiveness of Huxley's technique and leads to statistically valid conclusions. Using this model, a procedure is developed to find the optimal number of questionnaires that should be mailed in order to meet some prespecified target.

A report on two sets of findings related to interviewer effects, derived from a national sample of adults (N not given) The first of these concerns the effects of interviewer characteristics & expectations on overall cooperation rates; the second, these effects on item nonresponse & response quality. It was found that interviewer's age, size of interviewing assignment, & interviewer's expectations all had a strong effect on overall cooperation rates; the relation of experience to response rate was curvilinear in this sample. Age & education have consistent but statistically insignificant effects on item nonresponse. The effect of interviewer's expectations on responses within the interview resembles that in earlier studies, but is less pronounced & less consistent. 6 Tables. AA.
