"Cultural Complexes and the Soul of America explores many of the cultural complexes that comprise the collective psychic-filtering system of emotions, ideas, and beliefs that possess the United States today. With chapters by an international selection of leading authors, the book covers ideas both broad and specific, and presents unique insight into the current state of the nation."--
"Vision, Reality and Complex brings together a rich selection of Thomas Singer's scholarship on the development of the cultural complex theory and explores the relationship between vision, reality and illusion in politics and psyche. This collection of essays demonstrates how the cultural complex theory applies in specific contexts while simultaneously having cross-cultural relevance through the reemergence of complexes throughout history. It is essential reading for academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian ideas, politics, sociology and international studies as well as for practicing and trainee analysts alike"--
"In From Vision to Folly in the American Soul Thomas Singer collates his investigations into soul both in its personal and collective manifestations. This text is a valuable resource for academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian ideas, politics, sociology, and American studies as well as for anyone interested in the current state of the US"--
How do cultural complexes affect the collective psyche? Based on Jung's theory of complexes, this book offers a new perspective on the psychological nature of conflicts between groups and cultures by introducing the concept of the cultural complex. This modern version of Jung's idea offers an original view of the forces that prevent human attempts to bring a peaceful, collaborative spirit to conflict between groups. Leading analysts and academics from a range of cultural backgrounds present their own perspective on the concept, demonstrating how the effects of cultural complexes can be felt in the behaviour of disenfranchised, oppressed and traumatised groups across the world. Ultimately, a clearer understanding of the source and nature of group conflict is reached through discussion of central subjects including: * Collective trauma and cultural complexes * Exploring racism: a clinical example of a cultural complex * Cultural complexes in the history of Jung, Freud and their followers. The Cultural Complex represents a valuable contribution to analytical psychology and will undoubtedly also stimulate dialogue in the fields of sociology, political science and cultural studies.

Investors in the United States and other countries have a significant and growing stake in overseas business operations. The U.S. government is a leading proponent of a proposed OECD agreement to protect foreign investors from "discriminatory and distorting" government practices and to assure the free flow of capital across international borders. This agreement, a proposed Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI), would give cross-border investors greater protections than currently provided by NAFTA and the Uruguay Round agreements. OECD negotiators have stated that one of their goals is to curtail the powers of subnational governments in ways that go beyond NAFTA and the World Trade Organization. This article's purpose is to examine the potential impact of a proposed MAI on state and local environmental policies and practices and identify actions state policy makers can take to preserve their authority to accommodate local preferences in protecting natural resources and the environment.
New international trade agreements and institutions will have an important impact on state environmental practices. As states within afederal system become increasingly bound by trade agreements, their involvement in framing international trade rules and policies must increase accordingly. This article sets forth some of the new international obligations that could impinge on state soverignty, and makes recommendations that would bring more accountability and balance to state-federal procedures for addressing these matters.
