The present article attempts to throw light on the social, cultural, institutional and economic influences on workforce participation of Bahraini women. It focusses on employment trends in the Bahrain financial sector, the cultural context of work, existing legal framework and work environment. Available empirical evidence suggests that while universities put great emphasis on financial education and a significant proportion of Bahraini women work in the financial sector, their career progression is distinctly slower than that of men due to a variety of socio-cultural constraints, perception bias, job requirements and policy choices. The article underscores the need for an enhanced understanding of opportunities and challenges faced by women in Bahrain's financial sector. Using bank-level public disclosures and government statistics, the article analyses opportunities and constraints of women's work participation in the financial sector. It also emphasises the need to monitor the trends in female representation in the formal workforce through quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Multiple identities of motherhood constituted the core of the discourse surrounding the controversial Hindu Code Bill during 1941-56. In the effort to arrive at a social consensus on family laws for the majority Hindu community in modern India, the discourse in public and legislative spheres brought out the fractured social morality on motherhood in Indian society. The formative phase of family law reforms also played an important role in the social construction of the identity of motherhood. - See more at: http://www.epw.in/journal/2007/43/special-articles/images-motherhood-hindu-code-bill-discourse.html#sthash.zh0mVksK.dpuf

The present study focusses on the multiplicity of narratives in a critical phase of Indian legal reform, the reform of family laws in the 1940s and 1950s, known as the Hindu Code Bill controversy. The diversity of interests in society gave rise to a multiplicity of narratives within the Hindu Code Bill discourse in the public, political and legislative spheres. It also reflected the power structure in society and its translation into political representation. The paper discusses four prominent narratives in the Hindu Code Bill discourse in section 2, where, using critical discourse analysis as a theoretical tool, it analyses the linkages between social ideology behind narratives and the process of law formation. In doing so, the paper examines the interrelation between the rhetoric presented , the variety of reasoning approaches adopted and the representation of such society in the political sphere , the site of legal enactment. In the concluding section, the paper attempts to present an assessment of the relationship between rhetoric, reason and reality by looking at the history of the Hindu Code Bill discourse and suggests that the historian's craft in legal history lies in assimilation of multiple narratives and in interpreting its relation with the representation and manifestation of power within the legislative decision making process.
