Daghestan - the quest for national identity

Die Untersuchung basiert auf Interviews mit Angehörigen der religiösen und weltlichen Eliten Daghestans in Dörfern, Distriktzentren und der Hauptstadt Makhachkala aus den Jahren 1992 bis 1998. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Fallstudien in den Dörfern Khushtada und Rutual. Berichtet wird über Lebensbedingungen, linguistische, religiöse und nationale Identität sowie nationale Probleme im multiethnischen Daghestan. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass der Islam im Nordkaukasus nicht nur eine Form persönlicher Frömmigkeit, sondern gleichzeitig eine Lebensform, ein gesellschaftliches Organisationsprinzip und ein politischer Machtfaktor ist.
