Cultural forces govern a synergistic relationship among information institutions that shapes their roles collectively and individually. Cultural synergy is the combination of perception- and behavior-shaping knowledge within, between, and among groups. Our hyperlinked era makes information-sharing among institutions critically important for scholarship as well as for the advancement of humankind. Information institutions are those that have, or share in, the mission to preserve, conserve, and disseminate information objects and their informative content. A central idea is the notion of social epistemology that information institutions arise culturally from social forces of the cultures they inhabit, and that their purpose is to disseminate that culture. All information institutions are alike in critical ways. Intersecting lines of cultural mission are trajectories for synergy for allowing us to perceive the universe of information institutions as interconnected and evolving and moving forward in distinct ways for the improvement of the condition of humankind through the building up of its knowledge base and of its information-sharing processes. This book is an exploration of the cultural synergy that can be realized by seeing commonalities among information institutions (sometimes also called cultural heritage institutions): museums, libraries, and archives. The hyperlinked era of the Semantic Web makes information sharing among institutions critically important for scholarship as well as the advancement of mankind. NARCIS—National Academic Research and Collaborations Information System-- is the national research portal for the Netherlands' data and research archiving, which is governed by its own NARCIS Classification. The current instantiation of the classification dates from 2015. The classification is currently made up of two classes—D for the sciences broadly, and E for interdisciplinary areas. The NARCIS Classification is designed specifically and with care for the contents of the NARCIS data portal. The classification mostly represents the sciences. A few anomalous situations are visible in the ontology of the classification: the humanities occupy one division within the sciences, placed between the life sciences and law; and, the treatment of interdisciplinarity, for which a separate class E is set aside for interdisciplinary sciences. A dump of the NARCIS database was used to analyze the population of the NARCIS classification. The life sciences occupy 34% of the NARCIS database. A framework for research networking systems reveals the NARCIS database and its classification most objectives, with the only lapse being the output of entities and attributes to ontologies. The NARCIS Classification is also an occupational classification. The NARCIS classification supports a vital research portal that, in turn, supports a nationally-coordinated research effort designed to provide better inter-institutional communication of scholarly productivity, thus is in itself an information institution, in which domain-dependence is part of its cultural imperative. The NARCIS Classification incorporates an example of top-down politics in which funded disciplines are included and best represented. A perhaps unintended consequence is the encapsulation of forced views. Trajectories for further discussion with regard to continued development of the NARCIS Classification include identity, interoperability, interdisciplinarity, and synthesis.

This presentation addresses cultural heritage data-sharing practices through the use of Republic of Korea open government data for data-curation and data integration. Data curation enables data-sharing throughout the data management life cycle to create new value for new user needs. Our research employed a visualization phase, in which we used domain analytical techniques to better understand the contents of the population of 375 library-related open government cultural heritage data available at the Korean Open Government Website (http://data.go.kr/). Researchers translated all records from Korean to English. Data were in unstructured and in heterogeneous formats such as file formats, data formats and or web addresses. For data curation and integration, we employed the meta-level ontology known as the CIDOC-CRM, which we applied qualitatively to small sets of carefully selected records. To map instantiation of records, which is required for data integration, we used FRBRoo (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records – object oriented), an extension of the CIDOC CRM, to map the instantiation of data records in a typical data-sharing scenario. Then, equivalent mapping processes were comparatively tested with visualizations to demonstrate the effective harmonization between the CIDOC CRM and FRBRoo, which enables the integration of metadata and data curation from unstructured and heterogeneous formats. This presentation may contribute to the cross- or meta-institutional integration of curation across institutional boundaries in cultural heritage.

Die Linked Open Data Cloud ist ein Netzwerk, das aus Milliarden von Wissensbausteinen, einschließlich von Systemen der Ordnung des Wissens besteht. So finden sich neben Fakten Ontologien, Taxonomien, Klassifikationen, Thesauri und andere Systeme der Wissensorganisation, zugänglich für Menschen und Computer. Die Katalogisierung in Bibliotheken erlaubt uns den Zugang zu Wissen in Büchern über Jahrhunderte hinweg; aber Wissensorganisation umfasst auch Denkmodelle, die ein strukturiertes, gemeinsames Nachdenken möglich machen. Dieses Buch dokumentiert, wie die heutigen Möglichkeiten des Web, diese Breite von Wissensorganisation beeinflusst.
