Last September, nine year old Harper Neilsen made national news for their refusal to stand for the national anthem. A powerful symbolic act, Neilsen argued that they were protesting against the celebration of violence that often goes unnoticed in the almost habitual recitation of the lyrics. Choosing to protest the celebration of nationalism, veiled as it is by its lyrical and political banality, represents a bold assertion of conviction; the nationalist historical narrative memorialized in the anthem commands a significant amount of sway over the public's imagination and commitment of, and to, the past. Case in point, the response of critics, notably Senator Pauline Hanson, who made the argument that Neilsen, "is headed down the wrong path" and should be removed from the school (Munro 2018) by asserting their civic and ethical refusal. This tension reminds us of a much broader tension, that is, the continued "history war" wherein two competing visions of the past vie for command of the public's imagination (Macintyre & Clark 2004). Neilsen and Hanson serve as symbolic stand-ins for what has commonly been seen as the chasm between historical interpretation that catalyses this "war." On the one side, Neilsen and others sought and seek to illuminate how even the most seemingly banal moments (while anthems are powerful expressions of nationalist sentiment, all too often people passively engage with them) are a reminder of how history has long served to mythologise and confuse exclusions and violence as "progress." On the other hand, Hanson and others sought and seek to assert a vision of the past that demands complacency and acquiescence; an interpretation of the past that prides itself on its aversiveness to critique.

This Comment argues that every state should allow professionals to take advantage of LLC statutes, as Washington has done. Such action will provide protection for accountants and lawyers from the wave of litigation that has surfaced in recent times and to restore an element of confidence to these professions. This Comment further asserts that allowing professionals to use LLC statutes is not only consistent with the duties peculiar to the accounting and legal professions, but also a necessary step when viewed in light of the policies of fairness, efficiency, and public protection. Initially, Part II of this Comment describes the litigation crisis in this country and the sources of and reasons for the crisis. Part III discusses the current and potential future effects of the crisis if it is not addressed by lawmakers. Part IV introduces the LLC as a remedy for the effects of excessive litigation, describes the Washington LLC Act as it applies to professionals, shows how various statutes have addressed the issue of LLC use by professionals, and demonstrates how the LLC fits within the ethical codes of the legal and accounting profession. Part V of this Comment then illustrates how the LLC will help to remedy the litigation crisis, while Part VI shows why the LLC is a proper entity for professionals, and asserts that the Washington LLC act provides an ideal compromise between the interests of professionals and consumers. Finally, Part VII concludes that the LLC can provide professionals with much needed relief from the perils of excessive litigation, but that in order to do so, every state must follow Washington's lead and pass or amend legislation to permit professionals to utilize LLCs.

Accurately processing multiple, time-coincident signals presents a challenge to Electronic Warfare (EW) receivers, especially if the signals are close in frequency and/or mismatched in amplitude. The metric that quantifies an EW receiver's ability to measure time-coincident signals is the Instantaneous Dynamic Range (IDR), defined for a given frequency estimation accuracy, a given frequency separation and a given SNR as the maximum signal amplitude ratio that can be accommodated. Using a two sinusoid time-series model, this thesis analyzes IDR for ideal intercept and parametric digital EW receivers. In general, the number of signals contained in the EW receiver measurement interval is unknown. Thus, the non-parametric Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is employed in an EW intercept receiver with the associated amplitude dependent spectral leakage which limits IDR. A novel method to improve the DFT-based intercept receiver IDR by compensating for the high amplitude signal's spectral leakage using computationally efficient 3 bin interpolation algorithms is proposed and analyzed. For a desired frequency estimation accuracy of 1.5 bins, the method achieves an IDR of 57 dB with little frequency separation dependence when the signals are separated by more than 2 bins with a low amplitude signal SNR of 10 dB. For situations where the number of signals contained in the measurement interval is known, the IDR of an Iterative Generalized Least Squares (IGLS) algorithm-based parametric receiver is analyzed. A real and complex signal IDR Cramer-Rao Bound (IDR-CRB) is derived for parametric receivers by extending results contained in Rife. For tight frequency estimate requirements (these requirements depend on the number of measurement samples), the IDR-CRB yields achievable bounds. Global citizenship education (GCE) plays an important role in preparing citizens with the competencies to tackle existing and emerging challenges brought on by globalization. Yet, determining the desired purposes of GCE is contested as it is shaped by different perspectives on globalization, and conceptualized through different discourses in different contexts. This article uses Biesta's three purposes of education – qualification, socialization and subjectification as a theoretical framework to examine the purposes that the K-6 geography curriculum in the Australian Curriculum serves in relation to developing global citizenship competencies through an analysis of the curriculum policy. Our analysis shows that without a clear purpose for global citizenship in the curriculum policy, global understanding is consistently related to Australia as a nation state when represented at all, limiting learning opportunities to develop global thinking that supports a critical democratic discourse of global citizenship through the subjectification purpose of GCE. Instead, the K-6 geography curriculum is largely invested in socialization towards neo-liberal ends and a passing qualification function that prepares students to be 'knowledgeable' as they enter the world.

As part of an effort to grapple with the meaning of violence, Hannah Arendt argued that it was curious how infrequently violence was taken up for special consideration in conversations of history and politics, remarking that "this shows to what an extent violence and its arbitrariness were taken for granted and therefore neglected; no one questions or examines what is obvious to all" (8). While we are not suggesting that violence has eluded the critical eye in the time since Arendt's argument, there is something remarkably resonant about the idea that violence is taken-for-granted as part of human existence, and thus—for privileged citizens protected from its affects—invisible. In this issue, the contributors explore how violence continues to define and shape social, political, and cultural terrains. In what follows, we explore what it means to talk about violence and follow this with a general introduction to the pieces in this special issue that tease out the various locations of violence and its representations across different spaces.
